yeah i gotta say i committed that crime before with this guy that lived in wilmington for years and then moved to vernmont. he comes here and even still owns his beach house which is right beside mine and i never knew it. but he was here for a week in november and i was on my wavestorm just messing around and i showed him hardly any respect cuz he kept on falling and he almost took my head off on a wave and i got aggro with him and i was walking back to my beach house and he was on his balcony and me and him we got into an argument but after all said and done we were chill i told him if hes ever out that week and it was suppose to get big to come on over into my crew and we were chill after that.

But defiently show the respect back if someone is showing you respect.

Wbsurfer, you never know who might actaully knock your block off, too! HA HA HA I mean, we have all been out and had words, but, usually, a "Sorry brother", fixes things... Unless you are dealing with a prick, then write "I love boys" on their car window with your wax! LMAO!!!

i forget who it is, maybe pumpmaster, that has the phrase "surfing is not a group hug" as their signature line on here. i think that sums things up nicely.

I've seen it myself...more than once, and as recently as this past summer. Say one wrong thing to the wrong guy, and you got yourself a free a$$ kickin'. And even though the cops WILL show up... nobody's seen a thing. If you're acting like a punk, you'll get yours, and you won't be back anytime soon. Fins smashed off... boards stomped... near drownings. Stupid stuff that could have been avoided if somebody would have just taken a second to THINK.

Again... right or wrong, that's just the way it is.

Somebody here hinted at it already... if you show respect, get to know the locals, and surf well, sooner rather than later you'll be accepted into the hierarchy, get more waves, and have more fun. Be smart. It takes a great degree of maturity and skill to navigate the social order of the lineup. Being a prick won't get you there, but Aloha will.

yeah im a year round local everyone at my spot knows me and we all respect each other but if a kook comes paddling out dropping in on us and almost damaging boards stuffs gotta be said to them especially if it happens to me cuz im the youngest out of my spots crew so they all look after me and dont wanna see my high performance shortboard damanged cuz its my only true shortboard. so we all gotta look after each other.

The Hierarchy looks after each other. It kinda like a tribe in a sence. You can tell who is local and who isnt if you at a spot a cpl times. It ppl who paddle out right in front of everyon sittng off the rock followin the roatation and try to either drop in or try to sneek in from deep in the foam around the guy who is in the peak postion. It happens alot in the summer noob think just becuse they drop in behind a person that it automaticly make it there wave them . Nope Not Gonna Happen I just stall off the tail and swing the other 9 foot + of my board around on a dime . Smille and paddle back out:D

Here is my long rant on localism:

Give respect, and earn respect. Don’t surf a spot above your skill level. Respect lineup position. GO when its your turn. If you blow it on waves as soon as you get out there, you may as well leave. But if you are from ANYWHERE, and you know the rules, you can surf ANYWHERE. Pipe. Lowers. 48th st. Anywhere. You may encounter angry locals, but if you do those simple things, you will never be in the wrong… NEVER.

Guys who simply don’t want you surfing their break cause you aren’t from there just don’t get it. They don’t understand respect of true localism. Localism is about pride, not aggression…. True locals are out their shredding their wave and showing all the other visitors exactly how the thing should be ripped. That’s localism. Displaying your local knowledge and putting on a good show. And most importantly, sharing.

That’s why I disagree with Da Hui. Its not about safety with them. Its about entitlement, and if we gave every “local” what they wanted, the shores of CA, HI, AUS, INDO and many others would shut their doors to any visitors. Its like, deal with it. People surf. People will surf your spot… Tons of spots around the world are “dangerous”

Its like this (to me): You and your buddys play basketball every week at the same court, and usually its empty. You guys meet up for 5 on 5. One week, you guys get there, and there is already a game going. 5 on 5, with another group of guys sitting on the sideline “waiting for next”… So, since you guys play ball there every week, are you going to do the following: Interrupt the current game and tell those 10 guys to take a hike, cause this is YOUR COURT!!! Or even better, are you going to walk up to the guys on the sideline who are obviously waiting, and say “WE GOT NEXT, this is OUR COURT!!!”””

No, in any other competitive sport, things don’t work that way… What really happens next is this: You and your friends wait on the sidelines for 20 minutes, allow the next team of 5 on the court. When the game is over, you guys got next, cause its your turn. You play the other 5 guys. If you win, you keep playing, if you lose, you are on the sideline waiting again… Sounds kind of like a surf lineup huh?

Same idea as surfing… No one owns the court, and if you are really a tough as$ local, you are gonna wait your turn, go out and TAKE BACK YOUR COURT by winning. By outbattling and out performing the rest of the guys… right?

    So, in summation:

If you are at 48th steet, in August, at noon, yelling at all these “kooks” around you, you should probably re-examine your surf routine…. Cause a true “local” anywhere that I know of knows how to “crack a swell” and be at the right place at the right time…

If you are surfing all the time, and constantly surrounded by kooks, you should re-evaluate where and when you surf. Simple as that. If you don’t know where to be and when, don’t blame the tourists, blame yourself…

Zach, a samurai puts 10 words into 1. I just samurai-zed you. I agree 100% with this statement. If I pull up to a spot and cant find a place to park, I take the hint and go down the beach 10 blocks to save myself the heartache. I can surf all of the "crowded" spots alone this time of year, so I do. In the summer/fall its different. Thats when I start looking for new places to surf and have grown to love the adventure. Just remember- "The masses are a55es"

    Kook here

I'm a kook. I'm such a kook that I didn't even know I was a kook until about 2 months ago. There, I said it.

As a kook, I want you to say something to me. Not so I can respond and show you how tough I am and how I don't take **** from no one, but because I want to learn! I can tell that there are surfers out there that know what they are doing, and I know I am not one of them. If one of them tells me I dropped in on them and to back the F off, first I'll probably ask what that even means, and then I'll know and never do it again.

I don't think I'll be a kook forever, but as a kook at this very moment, I agree, lay down the law so we know what the law actually is. Because... there is no manual for this stuff!

    manual

there is a manual for this. it is called definition of surf etiquette. read it and learn before you go. i have been run over by kooks too many times. and now i have developed the male hormone and found myself ready to fight. that really blows my high.

^^^^completely different storyy. Its a little different when your local break is one of the best in the world, and everyone and there mother wants in on it. New jersey is far from a crowded wave. And even on the best of days it is easy to get your fair share. I've surfed more then my fair share, and I let most other people go before me. I am alway the first to bail out if there is a fight for right of way on a wave, and yet i still catch plenty. I just don't think you guys get the whole respect thing. Its not about glorifying the better surfers, its about knowing that everyone is equal because even kelly slater was at the bottom of the line up at one point. Respect goes both ways, from Noob to Pro, and from Pro to Noob. Yea, if your better then me I'll give up the wave. Because i know that you can probably do more with it then i can, but if you tell me that i shouldn't be out there, or that this is "your" spot, you'd better believe we're gonna have problems.
