we still have some winter left, but again, it has been a lackluster winter on all coasts. From the Midatlantic to Hawaii, it has been typical everywhere but nothing to write home about. They usually predict lack of swell during la ninas, but on la nina years in the past decade, I remember outstanding swells. Huge sh** coming in on a few occasions. Nothing like that this year. No Eddie. A couple mediocre days at mavericks. The north shore has its typical HH-DOH barrels everywhere, but while that sounds amazing, it is typically unridably large for a lot of the season there, and it has just been fun and rippable. Similar to CA. Clean, fun surf but no barrels you can park a bus in.

It will come. It has to.

    west coast was epic

was lucky enough to spend time out there, about a month, this winter. they had weeks straight of good surf multiple different times. often 1.5x overhead , double overhead, even triple. and clean. rarely as small as chest high. not kidding. epic winter for them.

Yeah, but its usually bigger. I havent gone past my 6'3 shortboard yet this winter. I havent seen TOH anything really down here. Its been DOH+ max. Fun days on the reefs, but nothing huge. None of the big wave spots in SD have woken up at all. I work above the cove and it has not broken once yet this winter. It usually has 5-7 days per year with nice clean TOH+ faces. Nothing yet. Just baby white sharks out there. There has been surf everyday, but nothing to even get your nerves up. I haven't had that "Ohh sh**, its pretty f'in big out there" feeling yet... There is still hope. We get the solid NWs through March. Once I have that session where I flop on the sand afterwards, thanking the skies to be alive, then the winter arrives. Right now it just feels like an extended fall.

Winter around here always follows the pattern - Occasional good day, followed by flatness. This year, thus far, however, there were less then average swell events (or good days).

i agree with others that there havent been enough decent days. when you dont surf for weeks and then paddle out on a good winter day i spend most of the session getting worked and never really get in the rhythm since ive been out of the water for so long. we need some days in between to keep me in shape and so i dont forget how to surf...

I haven't minded the flat spells. They actually lined up nicely with the shortest days of the year, the days I can't get out after work. But now that the days are longer and I can get a 1.5 hour sesh in after work, I'm hoping for some surf.

I work from home on Mondays and back in december I remember three weeks in a row there were swells on monday. I surfed on my lunch and after work. So no complaints here.

Here's to an epic upcoming spring... hopefully.

worst winter in the 10 years i've been braving the cold. last winter was the best. the last really good swell we had was in late nov/ early dec. when i think of winter i think big and hard offshore...maybe we will get some before summer flatness sets in.

haven't surfed in 2 months. Longest period of time i've ever been out of the water since surfing all year long. Spending a year in central PA for college has made me feel so landlocked that i sent applications for transfer, I cannot do it here. I was home for xmas but no waves, luckily i haven't been missing much, but i'm anxious to feel the salt water on my face. I'm going to cali for a few weeks in may, and by next fall I will find myself at uncw or college of charleston. i digress. So, to your question, i'm glad this is a terrible winter.

uh,if you were a wavejunkie in nj you'd have surfed good days since early december the week leading up to Christmas, and january 19,27,february 2,but yes this winter is as waveless as the summer, and if you were ever gonna quit surfing these past two months were the time to do it.last summer had more waves than this winter, and that's bad
