whatsup everyone. thanks for all the tips on puerto rico, i just got back from my trip. anyway, in march my family is going to the Bahamas. we are staying at Atlantis (Nassau) where there is no surf besides a choppy knee-waist high piece of mush. I youtubed some videos of surfing Bahamas and on some parts of the island there is surf. i am planning on bringing a board or two down with me when I go.

I had a few questions, where are these beaches i can surf? would a taxi/driver take me to one from atlantis? i am clueless as to where everything is so if somebody has some advice please help me out!

I stayed in Nassau a few years back on the South West tip of the island. We took the jitneys everywhere. Some times they would pass these beaches with small but fun looking breaks. I have no clue the names of them because usually the driver was doing about 60 miles an hour so I was unable to read the signs. Plus I was too busy hanging on for my life!!! LOL I did go over to Atlantis for the day and there was this point and cove with a decent size swell. It looked surfable, just short. Good luck! Bring my back some conch fritters from Johnny Canoe's!!!

Leave the boards at home. I've seen a few little waves breaking while flying into and out of Nassau but your chance of scoring is slim. Save the money. Watch the forecast and if there is a chance of waves take the ferry over to Eleuthera and rent a board. And never book a trip to Nassau again.

This is what I would recommend to bring...(nt., below). If you don't have one they're easy to make (all you need is a piece of HD pine, saw and sandpaper)...you'll save $$ and they're great for beachies at whatever size...

LOL...that's funny. No its a handplane...actually that is one of Danny Hess's...I'll post a pic of my own tonight. It's for bodysurfing...check out this LINK for how they're surfed. To be honest, they incredibly fun...I have used my in the summer when the shore breeze comes up and on small clean crowded days...always a blast.

After I post my and if you interested I have a template I could float over to you...just lmk.

Was just getting ready to post a similar thread question but searched first, how smart of me.

So, Eluthera... Anyone actually surf there before. Wife wants to go to the Bahamas and I am trying to find us a place where there is some surf and not overwhelmed with tourists and has more of a locals feel. She is completely happy just being a beach bum and doesn't really care too much about the drinking and party scene. Niether of us do.

Mitchell on this board has been there and has some pictures. Of all the places in the Bahamas to surf that is the best one.

Like everyone said...Eleuthera is the best. But really any western outer island of the bahamas will have swell.

You can also surf at Cat Island, Abaco, and a bunch of smaller islands.

If you are in Nassau...you wont get any waves. You will have no choice but to get to the outer islands.

Just so you know what you are getting yourself involved with...the outer reef breaks are super sketchy...shallow and sharky. You might crap your pants paddling out. :D

@ L 4 T, yeah, figured it was a handplane for body surfing. Did you make that one yourself?? Craftmanship looks great!! My dad went to high school in Hawaii, he said they used to steal the trays from McDonald's for body surfing

i was in Nasau a while back on a cruise stop. This one beach, was completely flat, but out about 1/2 mile+ at least you could see perfect peeling waves with size. This was a very long time ago, and I couldnt tell you which direction the beach was facing or anything, but there were definitely some swell coming in.

I've been a few times. It can get GOOD but you have to spend some time down there because the wind is always on it. A lot of good information on those websites listed. If you do end up going make sure you buy the "Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera" book and take it with you. Stick with surfers beach if your going solo, you can surf it alone in the morning but around lunchtime the "crowd" will show up. These are the only pics I could track down right now but I could probably find some more later....

Ive been to Eleuthera three times - all winter trips. Stayed in Gregorytown and there are many fun waves within a long walk, to a 30 minute drive. Believe me, nobody is going to go there and feel overwhelmed with tourists. More likely she will feel overwhelmed taking a walk on a beach that is deserted for mile after mile. The pictures posted above are right on...the first picture shows the mellow lefts, third shows the deserted beaches. The snorkeling/diving on the west side of the island is AMAZING.
