Hey guys, been lurking for a while and have a question about board selection. I started surfing in my teens on a 6'6" but then moved to the Adirondacks and took up whitewater kayaking, climbing, and skiing. Now I'm back at the beach and back in the water. Been putting a lot of water time in this past year although the winter hasn't been to kind with waves. My quiver now is descent I have my old 6'6" swallowtail thruster, 5'10" quad fish, and a 10'6" SUP. I feel like when I don't get out enough I struggle on the smaller boards so I was looking for somehing mid range, perhaps a mini longboard or funboard. I was thinking something 7'6" to 8'0". I'm 5'6" and 130 and surf in central Monmouth county mostly. The main problem I've been having with current boards is speed and stability espically when things get head high or bigger. Looking used if anyone has or knows of anything but open to new if on the cheaper end, saving for my wedding in 2 months. I'm not opposed to epoxys, I tend to be a little rough on my gear. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
if you're looking for a good stable longboard I would recommend the walden magic model. it does fine in all conditions, including head high+. you don't really need to go too big, it has a lot of foam on it and will get you in way early

well. are you opposed to riding a shortboard in bigger surf? i remember feeling for a while that I just couldn't get into the waves and later discovered i just didn't have a good board. a decent 6'6'' will get you into almost anything on the east coast so long as it's built well. If you weigh 130, you could probably even go a little smaller. I'm pushing 160 (and this is ME, not someone who's a "good surfer" and rode hawaii on a 6'4'' no problem, but it was a GOOD stick. My advice is to find someone who shapes and explain what you're looking for, and they'll probably be able to help you out...just thought I'd throw my two cents, in case your thoughts are anywhere near what i explained above.
I definatley thouht about going with a bigger volume shortboard. But, I think I'd rather stick with something longer and wider and more forgiving. I was thinking of the walden mini magic but it's a little more than I was looking to dish out for new, may treat myslef as my last purchase as a single man. Would I be able to go with their 7'0" size seeing as how I'm on the smaller end of things? Finding a shaper may be he way to go just to bat around some ideas, who's good in Monmouth county?
What do you guys think of the walden CD in a 6'2"? Looks like a super fun board. How would it handle in head high +. It seems thick enough to have some descent paddle speed for me.
