As mentioned more crowds/kooks but the surf isn't usually at it's best anyway in the summer. Even though the storm season starts at the end of June, nothing usually materializes for us until mid August through late October. Luckily my remote location isn't touristy, but definitely more crowded in the summer. I will never hate on the warmer/drier weather and longer days though.
yah i like the spring. hot days, hot babes, beaches full, water empty... side note: 1 week of recovery left. missed a mediocre winter 2011 and back just in time for spring
love september, the "forgotten" winter month. no crowds, warm weather/water, and usually decent swell. october/november are pretty great too.
I predict one, maybe 2 swells, just like every other summer. I also predict a plague of SUP's as prices on them are coming down, popularity is going up, and its a great activity for flat clean days. Enjoy it boys! If its going to be flat, im at least hoping its clean and green so I can get some spearfishing in. Nothing tops a grill full of fresh ones!
Summer surf? Really?? I got 2 words for you: "Highway 12". For a forecast, please consult The Farmer's Almanac.
i enjoy the summer...I am tired of the cold weather. It may be more crowded, but you have dawn patrol for that. I can't wait just to walk into the water rubber free on a nice smooth waist to chest and surf all day and never get cold or tired.
Spring will be colder than normal requiring 3/2s with boots an gloves well into June. However, June will be very unsettled with lots of storms that bring larger chunky waves in rainy, onshore conditions. Late June will see a huge bubble of Bermuda high pressure roll in causing ankle or less conditions for the entire month of July and most of August. Many summer-only types will quit surfing out of frustration so when we finally get waves in late August, crowds are manageable. Couple that with a rise in 70s style rabid localism, even surf beaches are havens of order and respect.
Same as it is every summer? Small, Flat, Meager, Crowded, Onshore. All except for the few hurricane swells that pump a nice swell though,
This isnt Costa, there are no regular 11am wind switches. Wind is the wildcard on the east coast. Morning and night... yeah.. only if the wind, tide, and swell all line up. There is zero guarantee that morning and night are any better than mid-day on the Atlantic. Sorry to crush your dreams. Beer and bbq will be there for ya though
thanks hollywoood U guys don't know crowds. Wait till this new bethany Hamilton movie comes out . there will be thousand of big screen surf inspired idiots in the line up. It happend with gidget and blue crush, its a vicious circle of kookism.
Dang! So much doom and gloom. While I agree crowds, newbies, & SUP all suck... I'm not gonna start summer hating. Two of the three are easily solved early morning or late evening sessions. Small waves also suck but hanging at the beach with family and friends is awesome... even if you do have to ride a longboard. I hate the gayification, commercialization, & Hollywood exploitation of surfing as much or more than most but remember everything goes in cycles- pop culture included. In the 60s surfing was big, 70s not, 80s big, 90s not, 2000s big, 2000teens hopefully not. I personally I'm looking forward to coming back to the mid Atlantic for the summer after being overseas for a year. Besides y'all forgot the best summer time perk... chicks in bikinis... who doesn't love that?
I love summer. Days off. Surf all morning, sleep all day, work at night, get off work drink beers by the fire, pass out at 1 get up at 5 and do it all over. Sure it's small and crowded, but that's when I take out my busted up old longboard and push all the kooks out of my way.
It might not be like clockwork like other places in the world, but consistently I'm out at 530 in the morning with little to no wind and then as the morning starts warming up the wind picks up from the South or SE. C'mon, most of us have been surfing long enough to know that's how it works in the summer. I love it cause you can easily surf with a couple of friends or nobody at all in the lesser known jetties for an hour or so before everyone shows up. Unless the last 15yrs of my life have been a dream...
thank god summers on its way! For us here in VB / OBX it might be a bit differnet scenario in summer, also everyone has their own deal, me I have a wife and two kids, but I was lucky enough to marry a teacher, she doesn't make much dough but the summers she is off so other than me working we arent held down. So I am on it in VB weekdays after work as long as its knee or thigh high and bigger with some punch. I can play in thigh high surf in trunks for hours! Then every Friday night I pack the wifes Honda Odyssey with boards, beach chairs and beach toys, and acooler of beer for me and the misses and juice boxes for the kids and head South to my parents house in Nags Head . ON the beach all day saturday and SUnday . As for the waves..... OBX is different lived down there for a few years and down there on weekends now from May thru October, seems if you look hard enough you can find something to ride almost daily, really waves maybe not, but something to ride yes and typically with no one around.
Not to sound like an a-hole, but I lived in VA Beach for two frustrating years and did not see a single swell with "punch". Outer Banks though...agree with ya there. As for the Bethany Hamilton movie...I'm afraid I agree with that prediction. Sucks eh? Another crop of "Blue Crushers" is about to descend upon us...
