so here is the deal. i've been surfing for about 4 and a half years so i never had a surfboard refurbished. most of my work that is minor i repair on my own but anything major i take to a shop. so here is the question. in november i took a 7'8 1968 vintage board to be refurbished and i put $250.00 down on the repair ahead of time. it is $500.00 total to be refurbished. the board was in pretty bad shape. also i won't name the shop as i don't want to give them a bad reputation. anyway they are reglassing the whole board. it was delaminating so they had to repair that also. they are putting in a new finbox and a pin/peg for a leash as old boards didn't have leashes. i told them i was going to be surfing the board so i wanted it water tight and as close to a new board as possible since i will be taking it out in the water. here is the deal they said it would be done by the begining to the middle of feburary. i called on feburary 1st and they said 2-3 more weeks. so i waited until march 1st still no call back. i called them and they said at the end of the following week it would be done which would be march 11th. i called them on that day which was march 11th. they said it's still not done we will call the shaper and call you back monday of tuesday. the next week i never got a call at all so i contacted them this satrday. there response was i know it's way past the time we said it would be done but i put a call in to the shaper we will get back to you after we tallk to him. then he says but when you get it back i promise you will be stoked. that was sunday it's now wednesday and once again no word from the surf shop. what should i do at this point? i feel like they are screwing with me. do you think 5 months is a long time for a serious refurb? what is the advice of others on this board and what would you do? i was so pumped to get it back with the last few swells we had come through and i wanted to take the board out and surf it. when i saw the forecat i was so excited thinking i would have the board back and i didn;t. any advice or help would be awesome thanks in advance!!

Its oblivious they're stalling you as your board is not done and giving you unrealistic/unobtainable new delivery schedule. Maybe if you give a hint of the area of the shop it sounds like the shaper is not on site so maybe some of the New Jersey guys might know the shaper. If it was me I try to find out the shaper and make a surprise visit to see what has or not been done to your board then go face to face with the owner of the shop. If the classic board has not been touched then might want to consider taking it with you and get your $$$ back and start over as NJ expertise here could point you in another direction to refurbish the '68 classic. If it was me if they were up front and honest about the delays is one thing but playing these kind of games is BS.

not to be a downer but...

firstly i gotta say that "refurbishing" (whatever that means) a surfboard for 500$ is NOT worth the money. I don't think i would be happy with a so called refurbished surfboard unless it looks brand new. To achieve that the labor must be extremely intense, and the product that they are probably trying to achieve (if they have any self respect as professionals) is probably damn near impossible. I wouldn't be suprised if they are coming up short in the amount of money you are putting out and found themselves in a "oh sh!t" situation.

Did they explain to you what exactly they plan on doing that involves refurbishing? I never heard of refurbishing a surfboard before, and wouldn't be suprised if they are taking your money becuase you might be a bit naive, no offense. Even if it is a vintage collectable, i think you killed the value by trying to refurbish it. Also, installing a leash plug and fixing some delaminated areas should not cost you 250$ or $500 no way. I would try to contact them, and get the board and try to recover some of your money, and just buy a new board. Sory man, but i think they smelled blood and tok your money. You should post the shop so we stay away, becuase an honest shop would have turned you away or given you better advice.

go ask to see your board today. say you want to see progress being that they have your board, money, and time.

    then go from there..

i'm the one using the words refurbished not the store or the shaper. they are reglassing the whole board, putting in a new fin box and a lesh peg. also it did have delaminating going on so that had to be fixed also. the board is a 7'8 fain's formula greg noll.

the board was in really really bad shape. but they promised they could get it looking great and water tight again. so you think i'm being jacked or what?

not if its surfer supplies. they are legit and stand by their work. If your getting a full on reglass i can see the cost. its going to take some time to get it all right. they are a pretty popular shop so i wouldnt be suprised by the backlog.

Spring is definitely backlog time, and the shop sounds legit, but it still sounds like they could give you a better time for the delivery date.

A few years ago i ordered a custom board in january from a local shop, and they kept giving me the same bull**** that you are getting, "oh next week, next week next week"... Finally i got so frustrated, that by the time june rolled around i drove down to the shaper, and he said he had never gotten the order. After another week of phone calls and ridiculousness, i finally figured out that the shop had faxed the custom order to the wrong phone number! I was pretty mad, but it was a legit shop, and as retribution they gave me 50% off any board in the shop i wanted. (by that time they had one that was pretty close to what i was ordering anyway)

moral of the story: even legit shops make ridiculous mistakes sometimes, i would check up on it if i were you.

you should be happy with the results for 500$, because they are legit and will do the job right. please post up pics and the results when its finished because I would like to know what 500$ in repairs for a board looks like. Do you have any before pics of the board?

after reading through this thread, w/ what you asked for, & the fact that you took it to supplies makes me wonder if you have any clue how much labor is involved in what you asked & how much of a pain in the @$$ it is for them to do.
honestly, you sound kinda like a kook & you've probably ruined that board.

how did i ruin the board? you don't even know what the condition was before i took it there. it was horrible and needed alot of work. i'm not worried about the value of the board it's an awesome old school board. i'm planing on riding it not hanging it on a wall. it needed certain things to be done to it to make it rideable again.

also it is sentimental value to me. it's my uncles old board who passed away who was a great person and a great surfer. i'm going to surf it in honor of him. it won't be my go to board but i will take it out alot. it's a 7'8 greg noll fain's formula and it's kind of egg shape.
