Does anyone else have a friend who non stop talks about surfing ... watches surf vids .. and gets so amped when there is gonna be swell ... but when it comes down to it they never seem to paddle out with ya

My one buddy does this all the time sleeps in when I tell him its firing ... won't wanna check out different breaks when its clearly not good up my street ... if you were to talk to the kid you would expect him to be decent and surfing 24/7 but always vags out ...

I love having a buddy out with me when its big and cold but also can't complain cause his waves goto me haha.

I hate people that talk up a storm and never show the goods

I have a buddy that I tried to teach how to surf, but.... We found him an 8 footer in the classifieds (forget shaper) in great condition for like $165.00. He threw all these surf stickers all over his car. Told everyone that he surfed. Would go down to the beach for the weekend and strap his board to the racks on his car and just ride around. He actually swam at the Y all winter long because he was nervous about being out in actual surf. But, everytime he would go with me, he never paddled out. Finally, the first time he paddles out in this 2 to 3 foot play around surf, he goes to stand up, falls, the board shoots like a rocket up in the air. He comes up as the board is coming down, CRACK! Right in the head, 9 staples later. Well, this was like 3 years ago. In the mean time, he still has his board just sitting in his garage and he actaully bought his wife a board. He will never go out. I have tried buying the board from him because my wife actually roade it and likes it. No go. He is a good guy, just not meant for the water...

I feel like I'm too obsessed with surfing... I literally check this site every hour along with surfline, magicseaweed, surfermag, and thesurfersview. But unlike the dudes who dont go... I'll drive two hours to my shore house in the dead of winter, skip a day of classes, just to get that opportunity to surf for like an hour or two. Then people ask me, was it worth it to drive for four hours, skip a political science quiz, and freeze your sack off. Hell yeah. I love surfing.

This has very little to do with this thread just wanted to express my one true love. <33333

+1 - I feel the same way, man. Honestly, I'm not a great surfer by any means. I just started last June, but any opportunity to get in the water is a go. Surfing hurricane swell/ in the middle of December and January hold some of the best, most humbling experiences of my life.

Yes, it sounds like you are describing every friend that I have. Everyone talks about it, but when its good and I pick the best spot, guys either don't show up or always have some random excuse why they can't make it. Or even worse, they show up and don't paddle out. This is why I only surf with a few die hard friends of mine. I consider my surf friends the guys that are always at the same spots as me. We all know each other by name. We are there every day at the same times. When its good, we all end up there... So, that is who most of my "surf buddies" are. The ones that are already at the spots im surfing. The fact that we see each other almost every day, in all conditions, all year in every season, we all stick together in a pack... Cause we all know that the other guy is just as dedicated.

I used to waste so much time rounding up friends. Half of them want to "go to breakfast" first. Or go get a beer at 9am and sh**. Just wasting time. I used to seriously freak out on guys and have meltdowns when they would make me late for a surf. Or if i miss the right tide, or the wind comes up because they lazy mofos all wanted coffee and bagels and sh**...

Just show up and be ready! how hard is that! I feel you man.

I'm glad to know that I am not the only one out there who thinks they have a problem... its like I know i might never land an air or do some crazy ****, but the sport itself man. I'm ****in obsessed. I watch every video posted on this site and surfline and surfermag. It's my porn, and surfing is my pornstar in every flick.

You can't put a price on good sessions, and you never know when it is gonna happen, and that's one of the biggest reasons I am always ready to go.

And like I said on here before, I'm the most dedicated surfer I know, and everybody else should feel the same way about themselves.

damook is sad reading these posts because i'm am usually lone wolf packing it every time i go. i gave up on friends a long time ago and just surf by myself. relying on friends slows me down especially since the wind can change at any moment.

Yea bro I am even like I'll text you where I paddle out and if they show fine if not whatever.

I "had" one friend who always talks surf looks like a surfer from the 80's had gone surfing sign on his porch etc etc.. Never took a trip with me but would tell everyone he was going to where ever I was going and made it sound like it was his trip most likely he didnt even know how to find it on a map.. Anyway he would be like we surfing tomorrow? I would pick him up usually he would be a sleep still or fumbling around to find a bootie or glove then he would need coffe then we would get to the surf it would be firing and he would be like ill meet you out there! and never paddle out Or say damn looks bigger than I thought and would not suit up making excuses. If it were small like knee to waist he would be the first one out there"charging" haha oh well everyone has there preferences I guess and some people even know they are friends aren't compatable when it comes to surfing.

people are weird. people like to say they surf to sound special, to boost they're self esteem, and to be cool or whatever. This group is made up of people who really surf, and people who just say they surf. Both are annoying as f*ck. People don't know i surf until they see what im looking at on the pc, or ask me what I did this weekend/yesterday. I dont go out of my way to do it. I'm happily married with kids so there's no need for me to impress. For many out there they still need to impress.

I know one guy who does surf, he's pretty good, but brags brags brags. He brags about his surfing, his big house (parents bought it), his car, how far he swims, how far he runs, his last trip to hawaii and how "epic" it was and all the pros he saw and wanted to give blowj0bs to. blah blah blah. He surfs at the most crowded spots becusae he's so epic and the photogs are always out. What a ***. He also has 3 kids which he never mentions. Priorities huh? I f'ing hate that guy.

Anyway, i never rely on friends and have low respect for posers, and good surfers who aren't humble.
