I'm wondering if anybody has any opinions about what size soft board to get for my 5 year old this summer. I was looking to get a liquid shredder but just don't know what size to get. If I go by their sizing recommendations then I'd end up with a 4'2" board. My goal is to push him into shore break this summer but obviously if he could progress to paddling and getting in himself I just don't think a 4'2" would be the way to go. I'm leaning more towards the 6'4" or 7'5". So, anybody have any experience?

http://www.yomart.com/surface-6ft-soft-top-surfboard.html that's what I would get, for sure. He could ride that for a few years, then I'd get him on a fun shape Pu board. Then around 9-11 years of age i'd get him a standard shortboard to fit his height.... thats if you want to teach your son to rip.

I would think the problem with a larger board for a 5yr old would be the ability to turn it as he progresses - he likely would not have the weight to move it easily

Get him a Beater Board by Catch Surf. www.catchsurf.com Great board. I have one for my 8 year old, it floats me as well. You can use it in front of a lifeguard stand as well.

hope this isn't a case where the parent forces an activity upon their kid!

Dangle a bodyboard and a surfboard in front of him... and let him make his own choice, pops.

My sons first board was a surface. That thing was such a pain, if you left it in the sun at all it would delaminate and form this big blue bubble, lol. He learned on it but if the beater was around then I would have bought that instead. We have one and it is perfect, not too big not too small. The Surface board was heavy and even though it was soft it hurt him when he got hit with it. Here is a video I made years ago of him riding the surface, and yes that's me being a kook on the longboard in the beginning http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2371608982680863603#.

Any board that is not pointy will do. But I've been using an
8'6" with my 8 year old daughter. It's easier to get them to
stand at first, if you let them stand on the board and wait for
the wave while they lean on your head. Attached (hopefully) is
a shot taken of us in Cape May last summer by a photographer
    for the "Vacationer Magazine".

Ha ha, thanks, yeah he was so excited. You can't see it in the video but there were a group of girls on the beach that started cheering for him :D. He was 6 in that video, he's 12 now.

Good idea. This method can also help identify whether or not he's a loose wrist mo'

Thanks guy's, it was a fun day for both of us. Last summer was the first time he really pushed to go. I was afraid that getting him in the water too early might have spooked him since he resisted for a few years. I let him call the shots during that time and he finally realized it was a lot more fun in the water than boiling on the beach. We had a session last year right before dark and were splitting this little waist high peak. It was probably the most fun we ever had together. When we got out he walked over and gave me a hug which is kinda hard to come by the older they get. Nothing better than hearing your kid call out an outside stomach high set in warm water with an empty beach and the sun going down behind the dunes :).

awesome! that reaction he had on the last wave is priceless. I give surf lessons all summer which is more of a novelty for tourists to tell their friends that they "surfed" while on vacation. Probably around 5% of the people i give lessons to have had the same reaction your son had - pure stoke.
