I was going north on the bay bridge tunnel on a trip back from florida and the outer banks. Going across everything looked like nor'easter wind blown chop till i got near Fishermans island. I could see some kind of wave in the distance, looked like it had size but didn't think it would be anything special. To my amazement i saw probably the best wave i have ever seen on the east coast. Line after line of head high+ barrels peeling for atleast a mile around the island like something out of surfer mag. (the only reason im posting this is because you will be arrested if you step foot on this island, wildlife refuge. Boat acess only) I've heard stories of this place breaking but thought it would take a well groomed swell like a hurricane. There's nothing epic about this little storm that just came though, so wtf? Does it break like this on every ENE Nor'easter wind swell? I think some delmarva surfers need to get a boat and get on it.

agreed...who has the boat? I've been thinking about kayaking out there. I have a friend who puts in just north of the bridge and paddles to the light house on Smith Island. You can camp out there. He spends a few days in the fall foraging off the island. Could be a great trip if you could figure the logistics.

I just came back from FL yesterday and I saw the same thing! When you looked out to the right at the point there were clean lines wrapping around that point and the oddest part is that everything else was choppy and there were at least 15 knot winds

There was a pretty significant and impressive Swell Info thread about Fisherman's Island a couple of months ago. Included were photos and first hand accounts from guys who have surfed there. Use the Search function to check it out.

The winds were out of the north yesterday, which would be offshore there and practically no where else in VA except inside the bay and some of the hard to get to barrier islands off the eastern shore.

The thing is, when the winds out of the north it's dangerous to be on the water out there. If it was safer you would see a lot more people out there. The current coming in and out of the bay is ridiculously strong and the waves can pick up in a matter of minutes if the winds pick up. If you don't see people out there fishing, I doubt anyone is going to risk it to go surfing.
