If you have sealed seams, a 3/2 will be fine. Definitely still need booties. Probably still need gloves. You might get a cold head.

I am still wearing 5/4/3 with hood. Once we get to 50 degrees I'll be wearing a flatlock 3/2 with booties only.

    for the last time:

    45<0 = 5/4/3 hood boots gloves
    46-52 = 4/3 hood boots gloves
    53-55= 4/3 or 3/2 boots gloves(if you want)
    56-59 = 3/2 boots
    60-64 = 3/2
    65-67 = s/s full
68+ = boardies or springsuit if you want

You CAN improvise. ca'mon people. if your cold put more neoprene, if your hot, take some off. it ain't that hard. I don't know how you handle cold water so I can't answer your question

Post number one, huh? Okay....just in case you're aren't trolling...

You really can't expect anyone to answer that question accurately. Nobody knows your tolerance to cold or where you are. If you're desperate to wear a 3/2 and you haven't been surfing, you should commit a day to paddle out in it before a swell pops up. I wouldn't consider any specific answer you get here as solid for the above reasons, as well as somebody playing a practical joke on you.

Gnar's table is a good start, though.

    Get out there!

    The solution is simple:

Step 1 - Go to the beach
Step 2 - Put on brandy new 3/2
Step 3 - Jump in the surf
Step 4 - If your nuts retract up into your throat, it's not 3/2 weather yet.

    Problem solved.

Side note: Keep the 5/4 in the trunk to throw on after your nuts drop back down into the sack.

Don't forget the 2 gal jugs of hot water to expedite the sackage drop.

If you put a maxi pad on your junk you wont get shrinkage!

:D You have to expect some abuse with questions like that :p

Just remember once you're cold you're cold and it's difficult to get your core temp up again, second, you burn signifIcantly more calories when you're cold, you're body has to work harder to keep you warm. We are warm blooded.

It's easier to "cool off" if you get hot, but much more difficult to "warm up" if you're cold.

3/2 Maybe if you tolerate cold well, 4/3 most likely a better choice. If you do go with a 3/2 bring hot water to drink, yes hot water, it will get processed faster, thus making you warmer quicker, hot caffeinated drinks will make you pee and dehydrate, when you're dehydrated you will get cold quicker.

Just remember if you find yourself paddling towards England you're hypothermic, or just a super kook!

I find it better to be on the warm side that way my muscles stay warm. Cold muscles = bad surfing and serious shackage!

    :D :)

    Buell?

What you guys think about Buell Wetsuits? From what I read they're the best suits around. Better than Patagonia, matuse, oneill ect. $360 for 3.2 $390 for 4/3 and they also make a 5/4/3 hooded. Apparently they last forever and you can barley feel them while surfing, and they don't hold any water. I'm thinking about investing in one. Anyone have one or know anyone that has one?

i've heard of them, but that bit i bolded sounds like BS to me...like some kind of super-wetsuit...or an "emperor's new clothes" scam.

also, when i first heard of them & checked the company out, they didn't make a hooded suit. i asked what was up w/ that & got some bs response about how the suits are so warm that you wouldn't need a hood. i told them i was on the east coast, not a california guy & they said that i'd still be plenty warm w/ just one of those hooded vest deals. made me feel like 1. they didn't give a crap about anyplace but california & 2. they were real full of themselves. i wasn't impressed.

a friend of mine wore a 3/2 all winter. Depends on how bad you want it. your wetsuit has a factory water temperature rating, probably around 55 degrees, which is total BS. That drylock is probably good to go. Some crappy old back zip 3/2 might be a different story.

I have been using my 4/3 for the last 2 weeks with hood/boots/gloves. It's a ripcurl fireskin. No complaints, was in the water for 1.5- 2 hrs.

Everyone has different thresholds with water temperature. If you have a couple extra layers under the skin ;) then a 3/2 should be fine... If you are super thin then you might as well just quit winter surfing. No, no, just messing. But thin guys vs fat guys... it's all relative

So a final remark. The temperature guides that wetsuit companies put out on there products are 'guidelines' Use what keeps you warm

I surfed in 53* water this past fall with 50* air temp with crappy 3 mil booties and a sealed Quiksilver Cell 3/2 when it was overcast in larger surf (longer hold downs & more duck dives) and surfed for about hour before i got cold, then surfed another 30 minutes until i couldnt move well.
In a 3/2 drylock you can handle it for an hour or so, depends on what your water temp is.... Here in VB we have 46-48* water. I am comfrotbale in my 4/3 hooded with boots and gloves for hours in 48* water with air above 50*.
