ive been out of the water a few years....was wondering when the springsuits are the one to wear...april? may?... doin a lil surf patrol from the bottom of NC to the top over the next month to month and a half. also gonna be doin as much beach campin as possible. help out an old timer with advice, thanx
Give it a few weeks or so, and you'll be in a springsuit, especially if the weather stays like it is right now , but definitely before the end of april.... I remember last year I didn't have a springsuit, but I was trunking it by the end of May - would have more comfortable in a springsuit for sure but I'm stoked for springsuit weather. I think i'm busting out the SS full when the water hits 65 and it's at least 70 air temp.
go out in the water now in a spring suit and tell us how it feels. right now the water is 60 and air is 70. jkjkjkjk. give it exactly a few weeks like what terra said.
another question thanx for responding....another ?....was gonna patrol from wilmington up to Va beach...thinkin of coast campin a lot on the way up....got a month to kill....Any breaks at cape lookout??? if the feds dont shut it down im chillin there...to the maximum. excelsior
I've already been out in a farmer john on some of the 80 degree days but today I wore the winter suit. It will be a huge difference in water temps along NC coast depending on currents. SE NC is 60 degrees currently. Ocracoke and Frisco are pushing 70 degrees when the gulf stream hits the area. Va beach and Nags head can stay in the 50s in May while it is 70 in the south. Those beaches often get a northern current. If you see blue water it is probably warm as it is coming from the gulf. Greyish looking water is usually from the north.
It is full on Spring suit time at Wrightsville beach. With the air temp in the high 60s and the water temp in the mid-60s I made the mistake of wearing a winter suit. I was burning up! I went back to the car and changed into my farmer john. There may be a few cold rainy days left in this spring where I might want the winter suit but I think it is time to retire it. The water temp is warming up real fast!
You have no idea how stoked I am to hear this. Im coming down to Carolina Beach next week, and coming from the hooded 5/4 full gear up here in Jersey its gonna be amazing to surf in a 3/2 and maybe even a spring suit. AHHH cant wait!
Water hit 65 at Wrightsville Beach yesterday! OBX has hit 70 a few times already in Buxton. If the SE wind blows hard for a day or two, the gulf stream will stick around a bit.
Water and air temps in southern NC are good for a spring suit now as long as you have light wind and sunshine. If there is a decent breeze and or an overcast day I'd keep the 3/2 on. You really want the water to be at least 65 and the air temp 75 with sunshine and light wind for a decent session.
Says here water temp is just shy of 70 http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/satl.html this may explain why so many bathers are in the water. It also has that beautiful emerald color that come with the gulf stream. If you're coming from the North you'd probably be okay with a hydroskin.
absolutely nothing more than a heater shirt needed. if the sun is out and its above 70, bareback. did it all weekend (ei/ab april 23/24), no problems. water is fantastic.
It's still quite chilly in northern NC (Nags Head, KDH) about 58ish degrees, but I've been working with a 3/2 and boots (gloves optional) during the past week or so. You should be able to pull out the trunks in about 2 to 3 weeks hopefully. It's obviously warmer as you head south with the Buxton area in the mid to high 60s. As for camping in the area check out the Oregon Inlet Campground and also there are a few other places on Hatteras Island.
throw that spring suit on now. ive been in baggies and a top for about 2 weeks. its all about bare back! just around the corner.
Spring suit in Wrightsville Beach has been good to go the last week. But, today, with this NE wind howling and dark clouds, I'm definitely going to cover up with the 3/2.
