If you beat the checkers there thats the way to go.Ive never been kicked out of the water.Like the previous post said you do have to surf in the surfing beach.I belive bodyboarders are free to rome.If you do get a badge, shop around. Its amazing how one town might be alot more money then the town over. For the biggest bang for your buck, that would be Sandy hook.It was like a car load of people for $ 50 bucs for the year.Rumor has it they surf nude over there thou.
The sad thing is that it's always been this way and always will.....and even if you own at the beach, you still need to pay. Welcome to the Dirty Jerz SwellInfo, we suffer until Fall.....
welcome to new jersey! tax capital of america! my taxes aren't so much on my house, because the towns takes in enough through beach badges. my taxes actually only did go up 2% percent this year. unlike a lot of others who's went up 4% in other towns. up north in bergen county where i'm from homes worth $200k grand less than mine pay double property taxes almost. mine are already $8k grand. i have no complaints aside from my street being filled with potholes. it would be nice if that was fixed, but if you call up the town, and complain they'll just tell you in november vote yes to increase property taxes, and i think i'm paying enough, and would rather get ****ed than vote yes on that. my 73 year old neighbor had to go back to work, and get a job after being retired for years just to cover his property taxes, and other bills. i don't know what the schools are like. they are spoken high of, but i don't have any kids yet, so i don't know first hand. that, and they're paying the town cops $100k grand, and they aint getting shot at. $100k grand to write seat belt tickets, and take complaints for stolen bicycles that aren't locked up. there's more than we all realize going on. everyone keeps telling me to read the book soprano state. it has nothing to do with the sopranos, but it's all about new jersey, and corruption. one friend of mine told me he was only 25 pages through last i talked to him, and told me i wouldn't even wanna read those 25 pages! i have to say the beaches are kept really nice though. MOST of them. atlantic city is not. maybe it's because it's a free beach, or maybe because of how much activity it gets. wildwood has free beaches, and all of the wildwood's have pretty clean beaches for being free. their towns takes in all that money with the boardwalk, and morey's though.
IN N.W.W and Strathmere you dont need a beach tag and the beaches are clean and the trash is emptied in the can all the time you dont see them overflowing at all . You can pay the meters on the street or park 2 block from the beach or park for free,or you can pay 150 dollars for a parking pass to park at any meter all day for the whole year and it trasferable from car to car. But what dont drunk driving shoobies have to do with beach tags and beach budget???? the would be a police issue wouldnt it???? If NJ beach serve the most beach going public then shouldnt all ther revenu from sales tax of buying goods and home owners taxes and hotel motel association taxes have enought revenue for each shore town so there should be no need to charge for something that was and will be here long after we are gone.
In most towns Beach Badges really aren't that bad. It's like $30 - $40 for the summer, which essentially is about 2.5 - 3 months. In many towns the checkers don't even start until a week or two after Memorial Day and end by Labor day. Without the fee there would be no one controlling the idiots who flock to our beaches. The fees allow the towns to control the trash, the rudeness, and the insanity that occurs on a packed beach where there are so many people you can't even find a spot to put your towel. What I do have a problem with is towns that intentionally make parking an issue (Sea Bright and Monmouth are a good example) and the fact that most towns force surfers into a small "surfing beach" during the guarded hours because they are afraid a surfer might hurt a swimmer. Really the towns are probably opening themselves up to the greater risk of a surfer hurting another surfer while packed into the surfing beach. There's no reason we should not be allowed to surf outside the flags.
new jersey government has always been corrupt. where is surfrider? Beach badges origins are unconstitutional. they made up a law that 'beach associations' can 'buy' and 'own' the beach back in the '50's. federal land use law stating beaches are free for everyone is ignored here, but other places keep us out by making parking impossible. surfrider does nothing for us here. again. like in Hatteras with their problem. The Cape Hatteras National Recreation Seahore Area.
Depending on the town, surfers / swimmers are allowed to go straight to the water without a beach tag. You can get on the beach for free that way too, but keep in mind you can really only bring your board (and maybe a towel) with you - otherwise they know you are going to be hanging out on the sand as well...
summer crowds in the northeast is legit. i'm sure there's widespread corruption and abuse by local town officials with the beach pass laws but you can't just let the crowds run wild because they will trash the place. i'm originally from florida and i'm still pretty shocked at how packed the beaches get up here. you gotta see it to believe it.
What's unigue about Jersey not found in other Mid-Atlantic State's, Jersey is huge non-riparian right State which means Tidal waters are all public so those shoreline owners don't have "rights" to the water or to regulate them either. We have studied this cases upheld by Jersey State Supreme Court, if the case law could be applied in other State's. This is what's Pi$$ing us off, like Jersey if the State upholds their "right" to Regulate public waters then how can local Gov't regulate activity out in the Ocean unless its public safety? Jury still out on that one too.....The State's have abused "riparian" rights by picking and choosing activities to fit their agenda's/tax code so contesting City,County Gov't,rich property owner etc viewed as too costly for legal battle. I have always Hated OC MD surfing regs done in the late 70's. The OC City Council tried to elimate all surfing (10-5) then the surf shops carved out the inlet and surfing beaches. For the record no attempt has ever been done to carve out more access either with OC City Council. This is has always been a sore subject with me for years, we Bi*ch about so much yet have not attempted to re-drawn the lines and rules with Local Cities/Towns/County Gov's which in my opinion has been & is the biggest threat affecting surfing in the Mid Atlantic. We just sit back and take it but one of these days we must all stand together and push back ..................... just say'n
And thank god for it. They don't want to spend their (i.e. taxpayer's) money on legal battles any more than they want to spend it on cleanup crews, handicap access, security, lifeguards, toilets, snack stands, parking lots and everything else The State should foot the bill for if they want to tell the City,County Gov't,rich property owner what to do in terms of beach access. God I am so sick of this arguement. "The Ocean is Free" is such a miss-used statement. If you want your "Free" Ocean then get in your car and drive 4-5 hrs away from the most densely populated urban centers on the planet and have at it.
I read your post 5x to figure out what direction your coming from? Maybe you missed mine too? I know some about Jersey case law but not the Surf Reg's from town to town so will use OC MD as an example. If the City Council decided to do away with the surf beaches from 10-5 should we just give up? and drive to a "free ocean" like OBX, the last frontier? Florida surfers and surf org's have bench marked their efforts to work with local councils to carve out surf regs in the interest of both parties. Just say'n the benefit of these Forums if and when these actions accur beneficial for all those interested parties from Shop owners, surfers others that feed off us to rally the Town Council meeting to push back on these regulations. You might be surprised of the outcome? I've seen this work in other arenas so its not make believe either. Sometimes you have to fight for what you have and even make it better over running 4-5 hours to a free'er Ocean. Sometimes you just have to push back in the right way too. If it was your back yard or mine this media the very foundation to organize opposition politically as well as public relations blitz too. Just say'n the Ocean not as free as it once was and if we don't stand up for our piece of it then more and more will be carved off 1 @ a time, once you give it up damn hard to get it back, history has proved that Bro .............just say'n
I usually just walk on with a towel/suit/board dont say anything and they dont seem to care. if i have a backpack on, i just kinda turn my body like its on the other side of the backpack (which it isnt) and they kind of just ignore me. works at almost every beach.
While I have a beach tag every year(I get them for free) there are ways around them. Just go to the beach early since the taggers aren't there before 9, or if you know the town well there are always places to get on the beach where they aren't checking. Whether it is jumping off a pier, behind a business, or simply a part of the beach where there aren't entrances for a good way and they can't see you. Even when you are on the beach before them they can come and check and be ****s. At least in Cape May the old beach-tag checkers will tromp around the beach in the afternoon asking for your tag. I usually tell them to leave me alone since I was there at 7am, but they have called the cops on myself and my friends once and I have seen it at least once a week in Cape May. If that happens I just jump in the water with my board since I don't bring anything else to the beach and then swim down a beach or two.
OK I'll turn it around - who should pays for trash removal, policing, public bathroom maintainence and lifeguards?
The bennies who don't LIVE HERE! Not the locals who live here year round and already pay ridonkulous property taxes.
