What's up guys, I've been bodyboarding for about the last 7 yrs and been really progressing in the last 5. I surf all year round and travel as much as I can whenever I can. I've tried to expose myself to as many types of waves as possible along the way. Points, reefs, shorebreaks and of course the local favorite beachbreak and sandbars. I can pull into barrels and spin off 360s. My question is how the f*@% do I boost some air. I watch the videos and seen the pro's when the come to town for the bodyboarding contest but I cant seem to project the type of speed and energy needed to boost off the lip. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Very good question. I have no clue! Each time I get on a wave I forget to boost airs because I enjoy the ride so much. But Occasionally I might get off the wave and catch a little zero-gee. But not flying really. But try and try again.
I've been going hard at it everytime the surf is head high or better. I know that you have to generate alot of speed, but what do I do when I hit the lip of the wave? The lack of response indicates that not alot of people are boosting or you just don't want to but a brotha on. Which I can respect, no one wants to give up thier bag of tricks but, please if your catching air out there point me in the right direction!!!!!!!!!
boosting your airs has a lot to do with your weight. Being only a hundred pounds i can boost air on prettymuch anynthing over stomach to chest high. Above all things timing is key. If you hit the sections at that perfect time you are bound to get some air. Also just be constantly trying like. Your not going to read any of these and all of a sudden be able to get in the air, you have to just be constantly trying new things and eventually you will get it. Your board also play a large role, smaller boards make it easier to air. I have also ridden both types of tails and feel that a crescent tail is much easier to get speed and air on as opposed to a bat tail.
^^same here im only like hundred twenty pounds so i can bust air on smaller waves, but i still have trouble with it. Its all about the timing.
Very good advice.....I'm 5'9 and weight 190lbs. I ride a Mike Stewart 42.5 cresent tail and the closest I come to boosting is when its head high to overhead and I drop in, carve up the face of the wave torque around as if to do a 360 then push off the lip of the wave and air drop onto the flats. I know that this isnt the proper way to do it but its the closest I've gotten. The first time I did this was by mistake but I was stoked because I thought that I was getting close to getting it. I want to catch some serious air....I'm talking Mitch Rawlings, Ben Player type of s#*t....I know , I know this is the eastcoast and it only get overhead 5 time a year at best..and beachbreaks closeout way too fast to find a boostable section..... but I'm stubborn and won't quit until I get it... So if anybody has a jetski and is willing to tow my fat ass into some waist high mushburgers so I can get some hangtime I would really appreiciate it.....I will compensate with Beer and Tequila!!!! Thanks to all who reponded to this thread and help shine some light on this issue..
Hello Yes! you are right. I am new here. By the way, I am really interested to know more about this forum. Hopefully I can have friends in this site. ^_^
Boosting is more on speed. As we all know when you played surfing you are flexible where the waves comes from.
My introduction I like this forum because of posts like thisvery much appreciated especially at what i am trying to accomplish. Does anybody have further reading? Where's the best place to start out here on this website?
its all about timing and speed. also a good bottom turn is key. try to get speed up and turn on a 45 degree angle toward the lip hit it and then do a manuver
Ok so I'm getting some air on the bigger days (head high) what im doining is bottom turning, then driving back up the face of the wave and pushing of the lip with my board extending my arms and getting pitched to the flats. I'm trying to get a full rotation but most of the times I just wind up in the whitewash.
You should be hitting the lip of the wave the second it starts to curl over then you should be leaning back hard to pull yourself off of the wave and start to rotate backwards (assuming your trying to get air that you would use to pull off a backflip). It is a very big timing thing. Keep practicing that is the key
My biggest problem with airs is that I don't commit. I worry about not making the rotation and breaking my neck in the shallows when I project into the flats. I end up boosting on the wrong section of the wave, too early, and flipping over the back rather than getting tossed out in front. As others have said, speed and timing are critical. I found that when I hit that speed pocket and see a section closing out, rather than bail out through the back of the wave, I have to pick the most insane spot to project from and just commit to getting blasted over the falls with the lip. I managed a backflip on a HH right-hander doing this, and I was totally stoked that I stuck it. There was a moment of confusion as I launched into the pitching lip, and then whammo! I was bouncing along the whitewash bassackwards thinking: "Holy crap! I pulled it off!" Of course, I've missed a lot more than I've stuck. I launched off a DOH set wave once, but freaked out about how high I was and tried to ball-up mid-air. Hit so hard I busted myself in the forehead with a knee. My eyebrow was bleeding into my eye, and I though I had split my eyeball open! Freaky.
Like most of you I am pushing way more in chest and bigger surf. Fast bottom turn for me then high line to the inside. Scoop straight up at closeout or if lip is visible. Most of the time I don't know if I am going invert or into full rotation. My next boogie I am going to change the plug placement. I hate when my face bounces off it!
Same, my fat a$$ can only boost in chest+...what I find to help generate speed:maintain a high line on the first section or two then make my bottom turn as opposed to dropping right into the trough and bottom turning...also, every time I've successfully boosted, I hit the lip earlier than what I had previously thought was necessary, like literally as it was just starting to pitch.
