True. And I concede that many Californians do a lot. The problem there is that the entire infrastructure was built to support the automobile culture. Try living without a car in San Diego. It's possible, but pretty difficult. You can't put numbers on it, but it's FAR easier to do so in NYC. Even those who desperately want to flaunt the oil industry in SoCal are fighting a near-impossible battle. I don't fault their character, especially Rob Machado ;), just the circumstances they have little choice but to deal with.

And this doesn't even mention the water situation. Alex Prud'Homme's book outlines it pretty well. Aside from the smog, you guys are, for lack of a better word, screwed. Let's not forget SoCal is a @#$%ing desert. Were it not for the horrid water rights battles of the last 200 years, neither LA nor San Diego would even have water. The situation in NYC is not much better, so I guess we're all screwed on that front....until we start desalinating seawater and try to find a use for billions of tons of salt...then we get a new problem! Here's to the ravaging of Earth haha.

    Happy Apocalyptic Friday :)

Ocean City, MD, does a rather good job of cleaning the beaches during the summer -- the city collects taxes and operates a nightly beach sweeping operation. The beaches are amazingly clean.

(Disclaimer: I am not promoting being trashy, but the city has stepped in because it probably doesn't have sufficient enforcement mechanisms. This is called an economic externality, no different than the exhaust spewing from an automobile or from coal power plants.)

Am I the only one who caught this?

"Trash upsets me as much as the next person but throwing garbage on the ground isn't any worse than throwing garbage on an internet forum."

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Of course I comes from the guy from NY. Thanks for making the other guy's point for him.

uh,'salty,' when you live at the beach and walk up your street to surf 120+days,12 months a year,is that a local?
when scum from ny or north jersey invade for two months and behave like rude pigs is that ok?
when it's totally flat or really small, slow and weak for a really long time surfers should be happy?
you must be a total kook.

Headrow - Congrats, you just brought clarity and understanding to all! Re-read if you will. Also please note, I've lived in NYC for 4 years and had a home on the beach in Jersey my whole life so.... does that make me a NYer? I think most longtime city residents would classify me otherwise but please trust your opinion wont define me anymore than someone who judges me based on the color of my license plate.

With regard to the one sentence your diligent sleuthing dug-up, I was referring to the big picture. Simple programs, cleanups, and general stoke can reach large numbers of people through social media. If the 800 some people who saw this chain saw a plan in works to hand people their trash, would the net result be better than if people like yourself tried to win an internet fight?

Bad stoke and negativity are manifested in any number of ways and the same is true for good stoke. I was simply bundling "negativity" into a bucket... I've seen a number of posts where folks are voicing their frustration with certain renters or summer people and I wouldnt argue that for a second. My argument always stemmed from the fact that you can classify all city folk or NY'ers as "scum".

Now to flip the script, know what the most ridiculous thing I ever heard was? Your telling me that my earlier statement was the most ridiculous thing you ever heard. You need to get out more... just a suggestion. Also, looks like you are from the Annapolis area from your avatar? Hmm, now THAT is a hike to the beach, but then again, I'm sure you've never considered that driving on RT 13 1.5 hrs each way to the beach isnt any better for the environment than littering. Did I just blow your mind?!

    I love these threads.....

But seriously, I don't seem to notice the trash to the extent you people are saying, maybe because these "NY'ers" don't make it down to ocnj?

Then again, Sea Isle gets pretty bad with all the bars, but people unloading trash from the back of the car in front of people? Thats takes some balls, or stupidity.

Present - Personally, I haven't tried define you or categorize you. I don't have an opinion about you. It was just an observation of what you said. And you put writing comments on the internet and throwing trash on the beach in the same category. And that, my friend, is utterly ridiculous. True, maybe not the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, but that is just an expression used in the common vernacular. So if you believe what you write, and you consider those two things as equals, it gives everyone a pretty good idea of how you feel about throwing trash on the beach. That was my point.
Now as far as generalizing - who really cares? I\'m not a \'local\' to the beach. But I don\'t get offended when people complain about assholes from out of town disrespecting their beach, because I know I\'m not one of those assholes. And anyone who sees me on the sand picking up other people\'s ****, know it too. Stop crying. Plus, I got news for you - generalizations are made because they are GENERALLY true. ewwwww- did I just blow YOUR mind?

"ewwwwwwww" <-- Leads me to believe you are a girl... and a young girl. I've seen how corresponding with your type on the internet plays out and I want no part.

You win. I lose. Congrats on winning.

Off to play in the Atlantic and barring that, drawing up the Empire State themed airbrush on my next board.

Be well and Happy 4th to all.

I might find 1 piece of trash at my homebreak chincoteage/assateague va once a year. I think the type of people who come here are the ones who have family values, respect for themselves and the enivornment. It would suck to have to put up with all that crap during the summer.
