i agree...like i said, it's a good skill to have. but most cape may & atlantic county beach patrols put far too much emphasis on it, IMO.
the boat hasn't been a relevant lifesaving tool in 30 years. it's a good skill to have, as it's one more way to be out on the water, but in 10+...
totally get where you're coming from & agree, but to play devil's advocate for a moment, it IS fairly tough to do an open ocean swim in the spring...

see, i found that riding a mid-6ft single fin really smoothed my style out when i got back on a more conventional craft...& i think most surfers...
author's got a seriously myopic view of what surfing "should" be...i can see some of the "cultural" stuff, but why ***** about ANYTHING design...
