^^i couldnt agree more ^^
Just another fad for people who didnt have a clue to begin with. Nothing about it is revolutionary. Just showing people who only new basic exercises that there are actually other ways to work out.

when your poor,everyday living can be considered training.i used to ride my bike from Elizabeth down 1&9 to woodbridge.i walk miles everyday,not because im training,because Im trying to get to point b.my work does more damage than any gym can.iv always been fit and didn't realize it til I got older and fatter.when your constantly moving,your burning calories and stretching those muscles.rich people that sit around all day and go out a few times a year to surf,yea maybe u should hit the gym or do some jogging.cant really see any type of workout that could improve ones surfing.running and lifting plates isn't going to help u when u take a 23footer on the head,and wont help u slide across that wall of water any better.surfing is an excercize.its like asking how do I train for sex

It's always good to stay fit. It improves a lot of aspects in your life, not just surfing. When you're in shape you feel better and perform better at everything. When you get out of shape (or when I get out of shape) you get lazy. Obviously you will be better at athletic stuff when fit, but you also work better and naturally have more confidence.
It doesn't have to be in the gym. Doing something fun that's also a good workout is cool too.

I work in an office on a Navy base, so I want to get outside after work - surf or no surf - not back indoors to a crowded gym with absurd machines for performing mindless, isolated muscle exercises.
I used to work out a lot with free weights in the gym or at home, but I much prefer being out in the fresh air. I believe surfing had something to do with that. So if not out on the water, I'll run for an hour - often along the beach - cranking off sets of push-ups, situps, and pull-ups (if bars are available) along the way. Robe climb would be a good exercise too, but I don't see them around much anymore - perhaps due to liability reasons.

Read "The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity". It will change your life and your surfing for the better tenfold. Trust me.
