    F*ck Zumiez ...

Spend some money at a local skate shop. Tell them your situation and that you want to spend under $100, but didn't want to go to Zumiez/Wall Mart. They can probably give you a lightly used deck for free (usually there's a bunch sitting around), especially if you buy some trucks/wheels there.

That will work better than anything in Walmart and you won't have to spend money at Zumiez.

Jawn, you shameless bastard. Don't you have some nice finance job?

A little more about Zumiez, and why I would never shop there.

Zumiez is primarily owned by Daniel D. Thurber. If you glance over their stock page, you can see that in addition to owning most of Zumiez, they invest in Halliburton and Monsanto!

Zumiez exists solely to make profit for shareholders, not to contribute to the skateboarding community. If you think of skating and surfing as activities to profit from, as things no different than day trading, then go ahead and buy from Zumiez. Otherwise give your local skateshop a chance.

EDIT: By supporting Zumiez, you are supporting the investors who bankroll war-profiteering and GMO's. A vote for Zumiez is a vote for Chemtrails and the military industrial complex. By supporting Zumiez you are not only selling out the future of skateboarding; you are selling out mankind's future on Planet Earth. Your hands may already be soiled, but you can still keep your child's conscience free.

You can maintain his innocence by shopping at your local skateshop. Or you can save a few bucks at Zumiez, and in the process, dip your child's ivory hands into the blood of Monsanto-crushed farmers, chemtrail-choked birds, and war victims orpahned in the name of Halliburton's profit.

Get some White Khiro Bushings or blue Doh Dohs. That way a 10 yo could actually get the trucks to turn.

if you get him a good setup and encourage him, skateboarding could be a legit money making profession. Many pro skaters got started between 10 and 15 yo. Some of them are now multi-millionaires just from contest earnings and sponsorships (nyjah huston, ryan sheckler, paul rodriguez, etc). Others have made even more branching out into the skateboard product distribution (mike vallely, ed templeton, andrew reynolds, rick howard, etc). Rodney mullen has 30 million. Little known jamie thomas parlayed his skateboarding career into a 50 million dollar net worth. Tony hawk, of course, has the most at 140 million.

If you think of it as an investment and not just a toy, maybe spending a little more doesn't sound so bad.

just making the point that skateboarding is now just as much a valid professional sport as football, basketball or whatever. Skateboarding is fun no matter what...but why sweat a few more bucks when, if the kid has a knack for it, the board could pay for itself.
