Are you kidding? Do your homework. Actually, it's not even homework, this is public info. Lesson learned. Just rent a board in Tama-gringo.

Yes, +1 on this. Jet Blue is the way to go.

Im going in October as well... good time to decompress before holiday hustle!
Only having to adjust to surf is the reason Im bringing my board this time.

Appreciate you confirming that I had the right idea, reguardless of fees.

What about shipping the boards through UPS or Fedex? Look into that at all?

I wonder how well these types of travel boards hold up to normal boards in the surf

More importantly, I wonder why they cut it in two places just to lop off the last 6 inches of the tail when one cut woudl accomplish basically the same thing?

Bag fees suck. Part of life for being a surfer wanting to travel. You just learn to deal with it and hope you get a clerk that hooks you up. Be polite, do all the lifting if its needed. Some airlines arent as much. If you happen to get a ticket where you change flights, make sure all the interconnects are the same airline otherwise you could pay the fee numerous times in one direction.

The thing that bugs me is that golf clubs are generally just the standard bag fee! Ridiculous, cause that set up is way more heavy than a surfboard, and golfer usually have more money than surfers! They should have to pay the bag fees, not us!

pretty sure Quantas does not charge for reasonable bags if they are part of your checked baggage.

Isnt Quantas a austrailian airline? Wouldn't their flight patterns be a bit limited to us folk. They've never come up as an option any time i've searched for flights.

I just got back from Panama and flew American. Got charged 150 bucks on the way there but on the return we got friendly with one of the ticket agents and it flew back for free. I'll take the 75 dollar average any day! The most amazing fact was my surfboard actually showed up both times damage free.....only second time that's ever happened.

    1) yes
    2) yes
    3) though 24 hours away from san fran, they are STILL a marvelous surfing destination.
    4) if you go i make this offer: mail me a map of oz and i'll mail it back to you w/names and
locations of spots. some easy to find; others um no.
    5) if you go BUY A CAR in sydney or wherever and sell it when you leave. in oz when you buy a car
IT COMES WITH registration and inspection. my foggy memory says try 'crown street' in sydney.

if you can rent decent boards, just do it...I'm talking real glass and foam or high-end epoxies etc. so much easier. especially if you're a sherpa like me and carrying around your wife and kids' sh* t everywhere.

hey there might be a way to avoid them. my landlord whose like a semi professional kite surfer puts her boards and sails in a travel golf bag. usually golf clubs fly for free and they never check them because its a golf bag. shes never gotten caught yet and she can throw like 2 or 3 boards and a sail in there. might have to try when i go to PR this winter...
