welcome to the 2015-2016 SI Forum Members "Hard Core Cold Water Surfer" competition! Disclaimer: not sponsored by Swell Info. Disclaimer #2, I am not very hard core. Here is how to play: as you surf this winter season, note the water temp and air temp when you were out per your local NBDC buoy. Add them together that's your score. If you are lower than the current leader, post it. (Do not factor wind chill ... I know it's a huge factor in comfort, but we are keeping it simple, soldier.) Other details - buoy number, winds, gruesome photos, trash talk ... all are welcome. But The Score's The Thing. (I know most of us can't resist responding to trash talk, but let's kind of try to limit the thread to the posting of scores. Or at least, scores and REALLY clever responses.) *Here's an interesting fact, Normie... the ocean temps lag the astronomical seasons by about 2 months. So if the summer solstice is June 21-ish, the atmosphere is warmest a month later, and the ocean is at it's warmest around late August. Conversely, this competition will really get down to brass tacks around Groundhogs day. Any Floridians want to set the bar for us? Might be your only chance to participate - I know your spirit is hard core, but geography and the Gulf Stream are stacked solidly against you.
