I have to get knee surgery in January and i'll be out of the water till may, and my 4/3 suit ripped and basically could I wear a 3/2 and survive an hour in OCMD during christmas time?
Today (Nov. 30th) the water was 54, and the air 45. I wore a 3/2 w/3m boots, gloves and a squid lid to fend off the wind. Not the least bit cold after 2 hours.
I'd say on a warm day, little to no wind, sun brightly shining, waves worth being out there for, and a wetsuit that does a pretty good job of keeping water out you should be able to get away with it for at least a little bit of time. 7mm boots and at least 5mm gloves are a definite though man. I've worn a 4/3 Billabong for the past 3 winters with 7mm boots and 6.5mm gloves and I've been able to stay out for up to 2 hours at a time. This past winter I had a few days where I froze the old scrote off, so i'm updating to a new thicker suit. But anyway, you should be ok for at least a while out there, depending on all the conditions. Good luck bro!
I've surfed in my O'Neill Mutant 3/2 in water that was about 48°F with out much issue. I don't think I would want to try anything colder though.
off topic but what kind of knee surgery are you getting? im getting knee surgery done on december 19th which means ill have to miss my christmas surf session
I was wondering this same thing. I have a 3/2 xcel and was hoping to make it till january. This is my first season surfing in cold water and dont have the coin to drop on a thicker suit since i only got the 3/2 a few months ago.
Microfracture Surgery, I damaged the cartlige from playing soccer. But goodluck with your surgery bro!
Of course you can. Wetsuits existed for many years without glued, taped, blind stitched seams and shoulder zippers. Just make sure you have someone without frozen fingers that can open your car. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven the first time I wore a suit w/ glued seams.
how bad is the rip in your 4/3? my fins cut open the back of my suit near the ankles a little bit but i still go out all year with it. I need to get a new one but it works just fine. Well, that and the water is still like 58 here in VB and its december lol
well actually the way this year has been going im sure you could wear a 3/2 if u had to. right now im talking, not january..
just sew up your 4/3 and then glue it to seal it. I think there is special glue that is more like the liquid welds they use these days.
Quicksilver makes a fleece top with a hood that you can wear under your 3/2. It'll keep your core warm in low 40's water for at least a two hour session as long as you have 5 or 7's on your hands and feet. damn bro. how long you gonna be out of the water? im having 2 tendons that have been strectched or torn taken out and fake tendons put in and im looking at a minimum of 4 months of no surfing or anything.
