3 mil now,7 mil in really cold, and maybe 5 mil if you surf like 10 days a month or more, but some of us think when it gets cold just bypass obsolete 5 mils for 7's

i think the only argument that can be made is the difference in the mil's which contributes to a "sloshy" factor. Some guys complain that they can't get good footing with boots on and refuse to surf the winter because of booties.
I would personally stay away from split toes because they are prone to leak in the split. Happened to me already twice, but you feel like you have better traction or footing in a split than a round toe. Also, try them on. Some brands run big and others run small.
I have a pair of 7mm, and if i'm putting booties on I might as well buy a pair that will get me through the winter. But hey if you have the money get 3's and 7's. I don't see any point in getting 3 pairs.

I will never buy a pair of 3mm boots again. I bought a pair of 3 mil split toes last year and they are not one bit warm. I had a pair before that and it was the same deal. The only thing I will buy from now on are 5 mils for right when I have to put boots on in the fall and sping, and 7 mils all winter.

we are borderline boots or no boots optional right now so 3 mils are perfect

id say go with the 5mm. you could always flush yourself if you get too warm (i do that usually at this time of year), but you cant really get warmer if you are too chilly

5mil booties are the go to boot for almost any condition when you have to wear boots. 3 mils are a waste of money for mid-Atlantic surfing. 5 mils arnt that heavy either. Better to be warm than cold and the 5mils grip better than 3's I have the Oniel 5 mil split toe. They're good tl about 45 water then its time for 6 or 7s. My next boot will be a 6 or 7 round toe. heavier but worth the warmth. When your limbs are warm you are warm.

I'd say it depends on your tolerance as well. I've used 5mils all winter and been fine.

Yes... Get 3mm boots for spring and fall, and 5mm boots for winter. I think 7mm boots are a bit overkill, but that's a personal opinion. Lots of guys swear by 7mm boots for the coldest months. But to answer your question, yea.. your instincts are good - get a pair of 3mm boots. They're very comfortable, and will put off the "luggage" of thick winter boots for a good month on either end of the cold water season. It's not that your feet will be too warm. It's that they're just so damn heavy and awkward.

7 mil's the whole way. in my opinion, there's no such thing as a hot foot in 50 degree water. the boot might feel a little awkward but i dont really see the point in having 2 pairs. the warmer the better!

just get the 3 and the 7 if you think you'll be cold at any point. if you're feet get cold your f*cked. if they get a little warm then no problem. i guess if the 7s are too expensive you can go with a 5 but both will be even worse

good idea. but are the 7s alot clunkier then 5s. ive never worn booties but i can imagine that 7mm of rubber on your feet can feel pretty heavy and maybe even effect my popup?
