btw, shark-hunter, I'm still heeding your proper advice (and that of others here) of keeping the ears covered up in the colder water. Don't want no drill to the head anytime soon.

definitely a smart move, emass. i'm barely into my 30s & the chisel or the drill is bearing down on me sooner rather than later. i get the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

I'm not talking about difference in buoyancy between a 6/5 or 5/4. It's barely even noticeable if at all. I'm talking about buoyancy of having NO WETSUIT vs a wetsuit, which is why I discussed 80 degree water and still wearing a wetsuit since I'm negatively buoyant(as are others in the general population). I'm never in 80 degree water anyway. It never gets past past 70 in new england :(

Was freezing in my new 5 mil yesterday. Stay home if you haven't been surfing this winter, water is still frigid.

Is surfer's ear a trophy for the charger much like cauliflower ear is for the wrestler? Not like I want a DeWalt bit to the dome, but the long recovery scares me a lot more than the drill.

Bro. After all that disorganized diatribe you now tell me your spirited response was in regard to an argument no one in their insane mind on here would have. Whether to wear a wetty or not in waters you're putting tropical wax on your board. Remind me never to engage in philosophical debate with you further again. I do like your Lougle Erph photos from altitude though, so keep posting those please.

    Sick new avatar btw!

    Stoke is highly insulating bro.

    thanks!

& IMO, no. it's something to be avoided if at all possible. i spent too much time w/ wet ears in breezy/windy conditions. mine's mostly in my right ear from years of lifeguarding & surfing...staring east w/ water in my ear. when i realized what was happening, i started getting more conservative w/ wearing a hood. even if the water's not that chilly, i'll wear it if the wind's blowing harder than a slight breeze.

Is it all temp/wind related or does water/bacteria in the ear canal have something to do with it also? For example, do pre-post sesh vinegar/alcohol drops help this issue or is it all external with temp?

I got a 2mm cap back in the fall and started wearing it with the 3/2 some days in November when water hit the 40s.

as far as i know, it's just moisture & temp related, not bacterial. "surfers ear" is a boney growth across the ear canal that grows to protect the inner ear from the elements.

Seriously though, I cut the sleeves off of my 3/2 February 1st and cut a deep v out of the neck on March 1st. Booties and gloves are for p~ssy's. I'm always super hot, even after 11 hour sessions.

Surfers ear is due to cold water/cold wind exposure. Both can cause it. Combo of both is worse. I read it happens mostly in water below 60 degrees. Some of those competive sailors (America's Cup races) get it too. It's not caused by bacteria. However ,as the bone grows and narrows your ear canal, it will result in water getting trapped in your ear, causing more frequent and worse ear infections, as well as hearing loss.

    ^^^^Hearing is for p~ssy's.
I cut my ears off in the 90's and put Salt Life stickers over the holes.
"Hey, what's going on? Ya' hear that?"
