“Man surprised me most about humanity. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Aptly summarizes and applies wisdom from ancient writ:

What profit a man if he should gain the whole world yet lose his soul.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.

Someone recently shared that with me, and I liked it, so I shared it with ya'll.

I aspire to be "present" as much as possible. I am most "present" when navagating a barrel.

Wave riding in general, has that effect, and it's profound.

    Well done

“There is surely nothing other than the single purpose of the present moment. A man's whole life is a succession of moment after moment. There will be nothing else to do, and nothing else to pursue. Live being true to the single purpose of the moment.”

Dougie Fresh this is righteous stuff dude. This is not a quote but a poem. I would encourage all to read (especially the young groms looking for a way to be). This was given to me when I was a "lost teen" and I read it time and time again....as I continued to live "MY Life", I kept coming back to it. A bit long but worth it I think.

"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."

Righteous tread Doug! Nice to have some knowledge wandering about aside from all the nonsense and buffoonery this forum is aplenty with. I'll share one of my favorite quotes from a personal hero of mine, Dr. Carl Sagan...

"The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides.”

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”

Yea..no doubt it's a tough one. I tend to glaze over that one thinking: When I'm old...like 70> and chilling in a rocking chair, don't be sitting there being pissed off because I can't paddle out an get pitted but, reflect back on all the times I did and be thankful.

I think holding on to your youth in general is a good thing.

    Doug, holy ish righteous thread.

    Some of my favorites:

"We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." - Oscar Wilde

"Maybe I'll never see the day that I win, but I'll always have time for a beer with my friends, and we'll fight everybody and the world till the end and if you eff around with us you'll get your head kicked in." - I think that was Matthew, 28:18. But it could've been Blood for Blood circa 1990-something.

(loosely translated and always different:) "One must be careful that in the process of killing monsters, that one does not himself become a monster." - Nietzche .

"Did you give me Chlamydia?" - The Former Mrs. Two Barrels
