The essence of my religion, captured!

Thanks again for posting, and sending it kpd. This video goes perfectly with the initial quote I posted, and my sentiments on being present.

thanks dudes. this has brightened my Monday. that message is on point Doug. there is true irony in the surfer that is successful at riding, but unsuccessful in translating that consciousness to their personal life.
I hope someday we can get more people to open their minds. otherwise I fear they'll never be able to truly open their hearts. For whenever I speak of these things, I'm told to go back to my drum circle.

I've been working on being 'without thought', ie, having a quiet mind lately. It's been my new year's resolution.

I read "The Power of Now" about ten years ago. It was the first time I was introduced to the idea that we are not our minds and thoughts, and that it might be possible to get some relief from the voice in your head that lives in the past and worries about the future.

So it's easy enough to be without thought when you're surfing, but the trick is to carry the state of mental quietness out of the water and into your everyday life.

quote from lester from "the wire"

"life.its the shyt that happens while you wait for moments that never come."

basically meaning people spend their whole lives chasing a dream or something and never appreciate what they have.kind of like what the original post was.

many words of wisdom in the wire

Scarecrow, contact me. I'm a Meditation teacher. I do it by donation only so the Practice is made available to anyone who truly is seeking this Path. Many of my students are recovering addicts, people just at the End or Bottom of EVERYthing and realized they need another Way. To find themselves.
Meditation trains your mind to carry that state of mental quietness. It gives Clarity and Balance beyond your wildest dreams.
I'm going to be travelling soon to do this Everywhere I can for a while before I disappear into the wild in front of an empty A-Frame somewhere.
This offer is open to Any and All here. Money is no object. I get paid in vegetables from a garden, hand knit wool hats, used surf stuff, I've seen it ALL. Share your story with me and let me Help. I'm no hippy dippy trippy dude either. I've done stand up comedy and grew up in a wild Rad life.
    Be well
    Surf often

In my experience meditation is "watching"

One you are able to watch yourself and your thoughts in meditation you can then train yourself (which I try) to meditate all day long. No matter what you are doing.

Read it in an osho book once changed my life.

    Please provide feedback sensei kieth.
    be well.

Something I wrote a while back called-

    Your Brain / Your Mind

Have you ever jumped into the Ocean from somewhere high up? If so, you have experienced what it feels like to know the difference between your Brain and your Mind.
    You start in your Brain-
Standing high above the water, all of your senses are taking in the world. Looking around, you see everything, the Ocean, sky, land, horizon. You hear the water crashing on the rocks, the birds, and all the sounds around you. And your Brain is processing all this.
You are also aware, Overly aware, of the people standing around watching you. You're aware of the height of the jump, and nervous thoughts begin to fly forward. Your Brain is processing all This as well.
    All the "What if's?"
All the "Who is watching, what are they Thinking of me?"
Senses. What if's. Who. What. When. HOW? All being processed at the speed of thought and fighting for attention, faster and faster. Each one louder than the next, until you just...
    Jump.
That surge of Energy as you leave and nothing but the rush of wind in your ears and against your skin, it literally sheers all your thoughts away as you plunge down through the air Loving the rush, preparing for what is to come.
    This is the Switch.
    THOOM!
You hit the water with an explosion and at That precise moment, Finally...there is No thought.
    You Stop.
    And you're simply...floating.
    Under.
    Peacefully and in Silence.
    Welcome to your Mind.
That nice slow, easy, free feeling.
Open your eyes and take in what you see. See as well as Feel how Vast and Deep it is here. How much freedom there is to move.
    Naturally.
Without any thought attached to it. See it for what it Is.
For a moment, just One moment, see, hear, and feel You for who you Truly are.
Unfortunately you now have to rush back up to the surface. You need air. Breaking through, we begin to leave the Mind and come back to the Brain. Thoughts of swimming back, climbing up. Becoming aware of your senses again, and the people around you. It's All back. Again.
    Why?
It doesn't have to be this way. You can learn to Breathe. To be in your Mind. With your true self. But this takes time to develop. Like any new talent, it takes Practice and Discipline.
Recognize your Brain for what it is. A non-stop running computer that is just Constantly processing information. And you want to try and filter your Thoughts through this? To find solutions amidst this chaos?
Recognize your Mind for what it is. A quiet, peaceful, Honest place, connected to your Heart, the home of your Intuition. It is here where your thoughts have meaning because they are not being influenced by anything other than your Intention. And when this happens? You are Free to truly learn, grow, and peacefully move forward in Life.
    Om

Read "The Untethered Soul" by Micheal A. Singer. The book does an incredible job outlining the differance between you (the observer), and the voice in your head, among other things. Mr. Singer teaches you how to achieve this free state, and the psychology behind it.

Kieth's essay is pretty on point in regard to the book as well. Good work there, Kieth.

I highly reccomend "The Untetherd Soul"! I've recently read it, and I'm about to re-read it. The book is that good, and an extremely positive life changer. I can't say enough good things about it!

Sick piece kpd. Great thread Doug.

When I was training I got into some of the Samurai literature, really dug the Hagakure and Book of Five Rings...Chuang Tzu is pretty sick too...not that it has to be all Eastern stuff, but the book Doug mentioned reminded me of that.

    A little American flavour...

'The frontier, in my view, is that forgotten country where men and women live with and by and for the land, in self-reliant communities of mutual aid, in the spirit of independence, magnanimity, and trust.(As Henry Thoreau once said)' -EA

Thanks Doug. I'm all over your literary recommend. You too Seldom on both counts. Check out The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I have a 1st edition I got as a gift from my sister and I re read it once a year. Walk away with a different lesson Everytime, it's That rad. The funny thing is, it IS a really great story but until I start reading it? I can never remember Exactly what it is about. People will ask and I always say- "A Journey..." and many of those people nod, smile quietly and say- "Go f--- yourself..."
