Hey guys, Im currently debating picking up a hyperflex 6/5/4 flow for the remainder of the cold water surf season... but I was wondering if I could achieve the same protection by layering my current sg5 billabong 4/3 suit?
I see that hyperflex has a full body poly fleece suit that you can put under your existing wetsuit to make it warmer...
so my question is in people's experience would a 4/3 plus a full body polyfleece liner
get one through a good couple hours in 40 degree water?
Or should I just stop beating around the bush and pick up the hyperflex 6/5/4?
    thanks for any replies

I surfed through 2 winters with a 4/3 and just a poly shirt. Pulled a few 3 hour sessions in january, poly fleece is incredible. A full body poly suit under the 4/3 would absolutely keep you warm through a few hour session. If you get flushed, in about a minute, the poly fleece sucks the water away from your body, and you feel dry. Only downside is it will weigh you down quite a bit once you have a lot of water in the suit. But to save the money of buying a full winter suit, I'd say its worth it. One recommendation: make sure the poly suit fits you skin tight, otherwise you will have hell getting the wetsuit on over it.

    poly fleece shirt

I use a whole poly fleece onesy suit under my 6.5.4.3 and feel pretty good for about an hour and half... I guess it depends on your cold threshold and when you feel your core dropping... my friend has been in a 4/3 and now too cold for him, with no poly shirt...so its trial and error... I love those under linings as it is also much easier getting off the wetsuit, than against skin.

hey guys, thanks for the replies.... my 4/3, even though it fits nice, it is tuff to get on so maybe it would be torture to get it on over a full body fleece suit.
If I make a decision I'll reply back... for what its worth.

    thanks again

I hear the drylock suits, gloves, a boots are great. I have been wearing a hyperflex 6/5/4 this winter and love it. I've been in 38-40 degree water for 5 hours straight without getting cold. I would highly recommend the hyperflex. they are also pretty cheap you can find them online for $250ish. The Hyperflex 6/5/4 does not constrict me in the least either. Investing in a good winter suit gloves and boots is a great thing, if money is no option go with a drylock suit gloves and boots, if money is tight look into a 6/5 regular winter suit. When you friends are talking about going skiing and paying 80 a lift ticket and having to drive 2-3 hours for good conditions you can toss on your winter suit drive half an hour and surf all day for free.

    Kman thanks for the info..

RID, ok good to hear a hands on report on the suit Im looking at.
Let me ask you... is your hyperflex suit the FLOW model or the AMP?
do you now if one is actually better then the other?

Mine is the "Flow" model. Im not sure about rules on this forum for giving out places to buy so Ill say that you can order the hyperflex 6/5/4 online from a certain wetsuit warehouse. This is where I ordered mine from. For the price I am very pleased. The only time I ever get cold in this suit is when Im exhausted from surfing for hours and am pretty much just sitting on my board. As long as you are moving you will be very warm. Air temps in the 20s and water temps in the high 30s have not been a problem. Im also a skinny person so I do not have a lot of body mass to keep me warm. Im sure there are better suits out there but for the price I see no problems with this one. I do not really know what the actual difference would be between "water repellent" neoprene in the "AMP" suit vs the neoprene in the "Flow" suit. I have never found that my suit is water logged.

the wearhouse is what I"ve been looking on....
Ok, cool. thanks for the info. from what I understand the amp models have air chambers inside the rubber that acts like a double pain window...
I think the flow model should be sufficient for me.
    thanks.
also I have 5mm gloves and boots.... would I need to upgrade to some 7mm ones?
    thanks

i would go with the 6\5\4 mine keeps me super warm just make sure youve got good boots and gloves. when i first go out in the water im normally sweating in my suit and then if i get flushed i am cold for a minute. ive got a quicksilver ignite and it really does the trick.

I got the 5/4/3 flow and its a great suit and has never let me know yet. I get 3 hours sessions on the coldest days easy . For boots and glove get xcel drylocks . get the Best and Be Done with it. If I have the cash I might get a 5/4/3 drylock and keep my hyperflex as a back up
