My advice ... Don't pack your boards at all leave them at home and buy used when you get there, there are tons of surf shops and most will buy the boards back for half price when you leave.

Then you don't have to worry bout air lines breaking your favorite stick and you can travel with only a backpack.

Mal Pais is one of the best spots in Costa, so no need to go down to Hermosa or Jaco unless you want to party. My advice stay around Mal Pais and enjoy, not much to do other than explore the beaches and surf. If you can get a round take a day trip to Montezuma and hike up to the waterfall that is close by.

May is good for surf too so you should get something fun. Also, not many surf shops in Mal Pais (at least didn't used to be), so unless you want to go to Tamarindo or Jaco bring your favorite small wave board and a board you use when it is a foot or two over head at home. Also bring some swim fins so you can do some body surfing too when it gets choppy mid day.

i agree, it's 100% a good plan if you decide not to bring your board(s). if your buddy has family/friends down there, have someone check out local shops periodically before you go, see if theres anything you like.

I love Mal Pais. I left a board there in 05. A 7'2" hull bottom. If you want some names of influential people, pm me. I made some good connections with powerful people, and having been able to contact them since I left.

if you and ur buddy do take your boards pack them all into a big longboard board bag with alot of protection, its super expensive to fly the boards there

One of the best waves...I agree you don't need to go anywhere else. Something else that might interest you, we post a video surf report every morning live from there. This will get you excited; every morning we film a 45 second clip from the beach and give a detailed report. Check it out:
