I had surgery for a meniscus tear in December and I can only do minimal LB surfing at the moment. My job is making my knee hurt but i need to get waves.... I can't believe I am actually asking this, but is kayak surfing fun? Should i get one and try it?

Are kayaks only good for surfing bigger waves? Bc i live on the P handle of Florida.

    Any inpute is appreciated.

I surf with a guy in La Jolla who surf Kayaks. He loves it, gets just as barreled as anybody else. He doesn't go out when its big though. Usually 4' is his limit.

There's this 70+ year old ft who does it around here...comes out onto the beach and does overhead presses w/the yak to get warmed up...pretty amusing

What's not is that he thinks his aarp card allows him to sit outside and snake every wave

Haven't seen him yet. Maybe if you tore your meniscus he broke a hip...summer will tell

Doing anything in the ocean is better than sitting on the beach or at home on your ass. If you can't surf or boogie, I say get the kayak and give it a shot. I've ridden them in some small/shallow stuff when I didn't want to ding up the board on the shallow reef.

Plus you live on the gulf, it'll be fun to get it out on the water on the flat days. Break out a rod and fish from the top.

What do I know though, I'm just a kook from Pennsylvania

    Go for it.

But personally- I would just get a bigger longboard

Back in the 2000's I had a friend who would always surf kayak or what you want to call it. He has special kayaks that where a bit shorter- and had a removable fun like a longboard fin. It was really good at it and could ride the waves just as well as a surfer- cut backs, barrels and everything- and had complete control. He usually paddled out on bigger days tho- like 5 or bigger. I don't remember seeing him on small days- but I don't know why you couldn't..

Everyone will probably say that your gay tho.. Until you drop into an 8ft barrel and make it out - then they just will call you a wave hog instead

Good one. Thanks for the laugh.

To Bruce: Just give it a try... the surf or non-surf kayaking that is.
