54 but only been surfing about two years. Definitely more difficult to learn (just about anything) as one gets older. There is one good thing about coming to surfing later in life. It seems that many other guys around my age who have been surfing since they were kids see their skills and abilities decline as time goes on and speak in the past tense of their glory days hitting the 23 footers. While I'll never be more than mediocre, my best surfing has yet to come as I gradually improve. Plus I'm having shiploads of fun in the meantime. So, I've got that going for me...

Suite thread tho. It is getting long. Somebody else started it.

Valhala: Just over three years for me. 1st year goal: Not to be a kook. 2nd year goal: To be the worst SURFER on CB. 3rd year goal was: Catch more waves and make the board go where "I" want it to go. Having a sh!t ton of fun and still improving!
    Peace...

That's Valhallalla, sir. While I haven't set particular goals, I have been trying to progress along a similar path as you. I'm still quite a kook at times though I strive not to be. I know the difference but sometimes can't help it. It's really all about having fun and making progress.

Speaking of kooks, while surfing Sunday saw some guy on the beach doing jumping jacks and stretches for like 10-15 minutes. He finally paddles out near me on a suite shortboard wearing fancy new rashguard and boardshorts. Shaved head looked like Slater. I figure he's gonna shred though it's not really a short board day. Paddles for his first wave, digging and digging with tons of effort and super serious expression. Misses the wave. Next one, same thing. This goes on and on, misses every wave. Finally gets out of the water after twenty minutes. I don't think he got a single ride. Reminded me of this guy:

54 - "Too old to bother, too young to care" - Bouncing Souls

"If you don't know how old you are, how old would you be?" Satchell Page

I'd be aboot 17 mentally, parts of my body too, other parts not so much. This varies due to weather and intoxicant to food ratio.

Over 60 here but look 50 and act 25 :) started at 60. An easy age to start (what with empty nest, more money, more time off work) as long as you don't mind being mediocre.

Other advantage is that death is staring you in the face -- so there's an urgency to each sesh as it might be one of the last. Each sesh is precious regardless of wave size or kookdom :)and you can get away with more out there-- you get credit for just showing up.

It's a great post when a 54yr old dude quotes The Bouncing Souls, man I love their concerts, some of the most fun I've had!

    "East Coast! F U!"

I usually feel like I'm 30...but I just cracked a rib on a bike crash, so, at the moment, I feel like I'm 80. Hope I can get back in the water by the end of next month, but, damn, this sh!t hurts.

I feel the same way. But I also think that surfing is adding to my time in this world by staying active and not acting like somebody is supposed to "at my age". Every day that I can continue to pursue this activity is pushing that other day a little further into the future. Even if it isn't adding days or years to my life, it sure is adding quality. I can't imagine not surfing.

50 but I'm told I act like I'm 12 yrs. old. Thats good right?
Been surfing since I was 15. Probably peaked in my 20s as far as surfing goes but I still feel any day in the water with ridable waves is a gift.

F'n killing me dude, on a roll:cool: Funny you mention that dude...I was out saturday evening on my LB, about a foot and a half tops, but rideable, and this poor feller was on some new thruster, didn't even have the paddle sweet spot dialed in, paddling like mad for waves, not making any. Front third of the board poking up in the air at around a 30 degree angle. But he was smiling and having fun, had a suite attitude and that's all that counts. He looked real discouraged when I told him I was a sponge though.

    Yes, that is ideal.

Whoa! That's awful close to a chest bone injury. Be careful, bro!

But yeah, the injuries are where one can often feel their true age.

Nah, my Slater-looking guy wasn't having any fun and his attitude was anything but suite as he made the walk of shame from the secret pier to his car.

Whatever. I'm old and I suck but I'm having a blast.
