Bowls is so loc'd out. Reason being, it's right out front, and well, bowls-up nicely on the reef. the paddle isn't as bad as other Waikiki spots. But once you're out there, and the surf is good, good luck mixing it up with Da Boyz. I paddled my sorry azz down to Threes and had a much more enjoyable experience, but still crowded as all hell. I got cut off by 75y/o guys wearing loin cloths...Uncle this, Uncle that.

It's a machine of a wave. That lineup is nuts however, it made lowers with the entire ct look tame.

Lowers is a way bigger playing field. Plus, you got lowers, uppers, cottons, etc etc.

When swell is in town, threes was always really nice. Bowls line up is too hectic..even more so when it's pumping.
I used to just go out at courts, usually just for little while

I have burned in my brain an image of Larry Bertleman or Buttons or one of those "Town" boyz standing on the channel marker at Ala Moana, calling the approaching outside sets. Anyone else remember that?

I lived on Oahu for a little over 2 years when I was in my early 20's...have surfed pretty much every "known" spot on the island, and there is NOWHERE harder to get a wave than at Bowls when it's pumping. I spent like 5 hours in the water on a good swell, weekday, middle of the day, and didn't get a single damn wave. You gotta remember, just about everyone in the lineup is somebody who also surfs Pipeline and is in Town because it's flat on the North Shore when the South swells show up. Great spot, but you gotta show up with low expectations. That being said, I'd take a perfect wave at Bowls over anywhere else in Hawaii.

I was there last week for an out of season south. That is a really fun wave, the crowd was manageable I just hung out in between the bowl and the next break rock pile and got my share of lefts running through the bowl. I actually think that's a better place to sit than right on top of the reef, at least at that swell direction. 2.9ft @21 seconds was wave faces just over your head and nice round barrels. Back to vb, it was 2.9 ft and barely rideable this morning.

Yep. Anyone who's been to Hawaii for a few days for vacation on here and thinks they have gotten waves at bowls, they haven't. Hate to break it to you, but that wasn't real bowls you got. When it's on, haoles don't get waves.

Stinkbug that's a great attitude. I heard so much about the localism and the wolf pak and all of that, but your know what? I didn't have a single problem the whole trip. I even shared some waves with kala and them at sunset. No, he didn't paddle over and punch me for being white.

It looked good when I was there, but hard to get waves. I surfed tongs instead, with a few dudes.
Pipe was silly with the crowd whenever it was good too, I preffered Log Cabins with a few dudes. Logs is like Pipe, just not as perfect. Being from NJ, Logs was pretty damn good though!
