Ditching school on Thursday to go shred some gnargnar. Probly PJ or Matunuck. Or Monahans. Yeeeewww!!! Beat it kooks grom's comin to town!!!
Don't even talk about how good it was today. Please I know, all I did in school today was check cams.
I wish I could ditch school. Go git some, youngster. Try and sneak a beer into your afternoon too. Maybe even make out with a chick.
How can you even check the cams in school? Let me guess, your phone. This generation is too connected to social media and texting. I remember being in school excited to see what it looked like after school. No idea what it looked like until you got out of school. Then, you were super stoked at a really nice surprise. Damn, I definitely wasn't the best student but kids are completely disconnected in face to face interaction these days. Wow, I'm sounding old. All I'm saying is put the phone down once in a while and just check it with your own eyes. There aren't many surprises these days since cams are around. It was great when you would walk over the dunes and see barreling perfect waves without knowing what to expect. As you get older, you still try to capture that stoke. It can't be captured when you looks at cams all day and know what to expect at least compared to the days of no cell phones.
There have been many times when I've checked the cam and said, nope...not good today. Then there are also days when the cam looks good so I head out and it ends up sucking. It can go both ways... My thinking now is that by using the cam I'm missing way more days of surfing than I'm getting crappy days because the cam looks good. The obvious solution is to never look at the cam. This forces you to go to the break and judge for yourself. I'd get so many more days in simply because once I'm there I'm at least a little committed to go despite non-ideal conditions. F all cams and cell phones.
I'm with you, Mad Atom. Today was one of those days I kept looking at the RI cam and decided not to go because I didn't want to make the hour drive. Shouldn't have even looked. Kook move on my part.
Yah but when you're talking $20 of gas and $8 in tolls and hours of your time to drive to/from the surf break it is nice to know whether there's at least a chance of scoring a wave when you get there...
But it looks like nothing from the dunes/stairway/parking lot, then after you commit to the drive, you might as well take a dip. Then it usually looks better at sea level, and now that you're wet, you are already better off. Then, what's this, a set! Wow, the tide must be starting to pump in, cause here comes another set! Ya'll get my drift?
Exactly. It can change at any moment. It's great when the tide shifts and you start getting some nuggets when the forecast says flat.
I'm with you on this. I'm fortunate enough to have a job that's flexible to the point of being able to go down to hatteras at a moments notice (within reason), but I want to know what I am going down for before I drop $60+ on a tank of gas to get there and back.
You've got some cool teachers that let you know when the break is macking so you can ditch class to go score.
Remember before surfline when that one surf shop would have an answering machine message advertising for 45 seconds before saying 'it's waist to chest', which meant ankle to overhead? Yeah, I've gotten old...
