Easy as this, "To wax or not to wax one's tailpad."

I've seen pros who do, and many that don't approve. To me it feels more natural to have the same uniform "feeling" under both of my feet. However, not a fan of its dirty appearance.
Just trying to get some different views from different surfers.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

I do it. It helps. Not "That much"... I don't think it would help a novice or surfer with only an intermediate skill set. But if you are throwing the tail around, trying air reverses and radical stuff, every bit of grip counts. It could be the difference between getting your board back under you on a layback snap, because sometimes its literally only your toes touching the side of the tailpad if you throw it too hard... I guess I am saying, 9 out of 10 situations, even pros wouldn't need it or even feel the difference, but every now and again, it can help...

A better, simple answer would be: Why not? It can't hurt. Unless I am barrel riding or setting up for a frontside air, most of what I do maneuver wise involves me getting that back foot situated on the pad quickly.

I have always waxed the TP. Works for me. like I said, why not?

well, it depends what TP means. is it a "traction" pad? then answer is no. is it a "tail pad" then perhaps….not sure. they are a bit superfluous : the pads, i mean...

Aren't they one in the same. I always refer to them as a tail pad, but when someone references a traction pad, I assume they mean the same thing. Tail pad...

If you are talking about traction pads, like the ones on the center of some SUPs and stuff, I had assumed that was not part of the conversation cause he asked about a tail pad. I am sure that is what he meant. Tail Pad. Otherwise my entire statement is null and void.

The only other piece of advice, is that this practice, waxing the tail pad can eventually result in the deterioration of the tail pad. I have had some come lose and start to peel, both from over surfing it, but when you apply the wax back and forth, you are ripping away at the material and slowing jarring the adhesive loose. Unless you are surfing almost every day on the same board, no biggie.

1 word for u traction pad freaks...astrodeck..u use that u don't need wax.i prefer no pad, just straight board.usually u want to get barreled,ur feet are planted in the middle of the board,so the tractions useless.maybe its good for turns idk I don't use them

Wow - actually a surf related question that probably was not asked before...

For me it depends on the pad- some brands are NG and wax really does help. I really like dakine traction pad- they don't need any wax...

yes. it seems to keeps my rear foot a little stickier, which might not matter when its on the pad, but seems like it does a bit when your rear foot is up off the pad.

NO, it's a TRACTION pad, that would be like waxing the grip tape of a skateboard. If you want to wax the tail, I suggest you go without the traction pad. If it works for you though, go for it, it's your board...

i kinda always thought that they are traction pads which are there for traction.

Wear a bootie on your rear foot...will likely have a greater effect. But I'm with dawn patrol...no need for it...as for the uniform feel...drop the full pad and just buy a kick pad...will have the best of both worlds.
