I am right-eye dominant, right handed, right footed, yet I surf, skate, and snowboard goofy... I feel as if I don't have the same power and control in any boardsport... in surfing i can handle over-head waves and i can handle speed but turning is so hard and awkward for me! In skateboarding It's really hard for me to get good pop and to land tricks, and for snowboarding I can do tricks but it just feels awkward! Is there anyone else who is cursed with this? I love surfing and I wanna progress but as much as I practice I cant seem to get the feel! Any tips?
Bro I'm righty everything and goofy all board sports too. Sounds like this is all in your head. Literally. If you want to turn, look where you want to go. Loosen the body up and let your head lead the way. Handling OH waves is a lot harder than turning and if you've got speed behind you then turns will be much easier and more effective. If you say turning is awkward I'm wondering how much you bend knees versus just being back and leaning forward.
Count your blessings and make the most of what ya got. http://www.athlebrities.com/post-images/athlebrities/2011/12/LOVE1.jpg
I'm a lefty that does all other sports as a righty. Except shoot, i aim with either eye, whichever has the best angle. Actually i pretty much only write left-handed. Most everything else is right. I just take the easy route and claim to be ambidextrous.
Im a righty and Goofy, life is perfect that way. After awhile you will be ambidextrous and both legs and feet will be strong. Do deep knee bends on your left leg only to strength it up. The view from a Goofy footer is way better. Also there are more better lefts in the world than rights…keep at it.
one of my (quite experienced) surfer dood friends goes frontside both ways. no backside for him...and he somehow pulls it off.
My dad is a competitive trap shooter, a good one at that. Those dudes tweak about their stuff like we do about weather, wetsuites, and board design. Shooting trap/skeet is very different than shooting a rifle/handgun, and closing one eye can actually be detrimental... Point I'm getting at is these dudes get all nerdy about eye dominance, and you can certainly do some things to train your non-dominant eye to become stronger(not the right word but you get my drift)...if you can't find anything w/ a search PM me and I'll talk to my Pa.
Maybe it's your board. I rode a curseboard one year. It was a Sean Thompson 7' single fin. The reports would be calling for head high. I'd get there, flat. Or it'll be head high, but the wave would split and go around me. It was a hand me down so I couldn't really complain.
I surf all summer up until January, than I don't get back in till late march cause I snowboard. And let me clarify, I can turn, I can snap, I can do cutbacks, I even got a little frontside air before, I just feel awkward on the board! I was looking for someone in my same position that had some advice for how to improve my technique
Just start tweaking things to make yourself more comfortable. Change where you put your feet, straighten your legs, bend your knees more...just figure out how it feels right for you. We cant tell you what your body wants to do.
Yeah like Leetymike said, just try some other things to see how it feels and how your surf, and if that doesn't work, look into a new board that makes you feel comfortable. Sometimes you just click with a board and it feels like an extension of you.
Your jinxing yourself. I don't think goofy footers are normally left handed... At least not for me, and I don't see why it would matter anyway.
a friend of mine is also righty, but plays the guitar lefty (he surfs regular foot). He sucks at guitar and claims it's because he started the wrong way (all they had was a lefty guitar around the house when he was young). He's been playing lefty for decades, so, for him, starting over righty would be like starting over from scratch. like many others, I'm righty, but goofy in all board sports. It works excellent for me, but you may have just started on the wrong foot...literary. I knew which way was correct for me from day one, but some people just don't know which way to start riding. Good thing is, this might make you a better switch rider (maybe not so important in surfing, but super important in skate and snowboarding). If I were you, I might start trying to everything regular foot from now on and make goofy my switch stance.
I skate reg and surf goofy. I guess Im double fvcked. Ive tried to learn how to skate switch but it aint happening. Ive tried surfing frontside both ways also but surfing regular feels weird. I can do it but I feel all backwards, like Im riding fakie. Just try a bunch of different stuff and do whatever works best.
