Am I the only one who lives 3 hours from any wave source?

I'm fortunate to live near the beach. Even when my parents split and I had to live in Philly, it was still an hour to the ocean when he would take me, but, my Dad didn't teach me to surf....my mom did! Now I surf like a girl.

 

Where in CT are you dude? I understand if you don't want to disclose, guessing the NW corner somewhere. I'm in the New Haven area and an hour away from the closest wave(except on those very rare days when we have a 40 mph S wind). That being said, it's my mom and sister that got me in the water. My mom would cart me up there every friggin' weekend to get to the surf, god bless her, I owe her so much. As much as I feel the need to move closer, I always tell myself an hour's not that bad, could be worse.

 

How come none of you CT guys live in Brideport like Trevolution? I guess that's why he is a drunken, skateboarder revolutionary.

Well, here's one good thing aboot living far from the ocean: It keeps you hungry and you don't take nothing for granted. You appreciate waves more. If you plan on college, go to Seton Hall and do a tour of duty in some heaving Jersey barrels. Avoid Fordham University because you'll be stuck getting hassled by Eric Eichen at Long Beach or you'll become a hipster fool at 90th St Rockaway. Go to Jersey.

I do go to Warm Winds, but I try to spread the love b/t them and Narragansett Surf and Skate(used to be The Watershed).
And PJB I've spent some time in the BPT, had a few friends from there when I was younger, nothing to really lure me down there anymore, went to the vibes a few times.

 

Yes and No. I am the only one in my family that ever surfed. I can imagine that if I had family members teaching me to surf as I grew up, it would have been a greater advantage. But I am excited to give my boy the extra advantage...

 

Man I'm not sure of the actual year, early 90's at some point...I can still remember the number for their surf report. He is a cool dude, when I was your age me and a buddy were paddling out in late March and he was the only other guy out, nice day too, solid 4-5 w/ offshores, and he was just super cool, seemed pretty stoked to see two groms in the water that time of year.

 

You're definitely not the only surfer who lives 3 hours away from waves. In fact, I'm sure there's a lot of more inland surfers that wish they only had a 3 hour commute. Stick with it - it's worth it!

You're also not the only one who didn't start because of their dad. I taught myself how to surf when I was seven. My first board was a 9' yellow Liquid Shredder - got a lot of **** from older heads for that one, but I didn't care. I was having a blast then and I'm having a blast now!

 

Goshen, ct eh? Ever been to action wildlife? I saw a sign for it, but never visited. Too bad mohawk mountain grooms the **** **** out of their snow.(ie no powder. They'll groom every single trail with a foot of freshies falling overnight. Drives me bat****. Sundown is a better bet, they leave some freshies on a few trails but is crowded and has less elevation/natural snow). At least you're close to a place to ski or snowboard assuming you do? They get a lot of snow up there. Nearly 100 inches a year at around 1500 feet.

Goshen is not 3 hours from the closest break. It's 2 hours.(without stopping outside of rush hour) You don't need to go all the way to gansett to get waves. There are waves in western RI to be had. Still 4 hours round trip to the closest break is major league pain in the ass. There's no real need to live within a few miles of the coast around here because it's so inconsistent. 30 minute drive away is cool, but I feel for you with a drive like that. I'd be too tired to handle all that very often. I mean it's one thing to drive that far and just lie on the beach, but to be doing all that physical exertion and then turn around and drive 2 hours is exausting.(and cost $$$)

 

I know a few that have it worse man. The love of surfing becomes like a thorn in the side for some. My buddy has a great career in Ohio and laments every swell he misses, which is most of them!

The worst part of driving significant distances to the surf is when conditions change on you while en route. Just keep working towards the lifestyle you want, and enjoy the ride(s).
