Did you not see the last 15 minutes of the J Bay contest? After Mick got out of the water and the announcers were yammering, one could see guys paddling out to the point.

There's 2 things that keep me out. Blue fish and cold.

Wow, it must be freaky on those icy overcast days. I have only surfed the east coast (jax) about 5 times and couldn't see my feet while sitting on the board. Unless it's stormy you can see the bottom in the panhandle.

Is surfing in that cold ass water worth it?

It's probably better that the water is murky, that way you can't see them. If you could see every shark in the water, you probably wouldn't go in hahaha

Saw a 6' to 7' shark explode on top of the water about 15 feet away from me and another girl Sunday at FB. Think it was attacking a dolphin. We paddled in along with a handfull of other dudes and watched the shark slashing around for 5 minures or so. She thought it was a hammerhead but all I saw was the fins and body. Walked down a couple streets and went back out. We ain't alone out there! Haven't seen a big one actively feeding that close in awhile.

if you got out of the water in FL every time someone saw a shark there would be no surfing

FL is by far the sharkiest of the states

That's kinda how I feel. Been up in a small plane and it is amazing how many large objects are in the surf.

You just roll the dice and hope for the best each time here. Gotta ignore the small ones, be aware of the larger ones, stay alert but not paranoid.

Along the lines of what LazE & DSUP said:
buddy of mine flies Coast Guard choppers out of Eliz City & elsewhere. Always says, man, you guys wouldn't even surf if you could see what we see from the choppers swimming in & around surfers & swimmers.

Which makes ya wonder: are we really even on the menu?

I think it's like picking up fat chicks at the bar. When there are better options available, such as a seal or school of fish, they will go with the better selection, but when options are low and they need something now or just simply want something to hold them over till something better comes along then they settle for what's easiest at the moment. Most times after one bite they realize quickly that this isn't any good, matter of fact it disgusts them, but it was fun for all all of a minute.

Yes. I Did see it. It was Derek Hynd that paddled out first. 45 min after the incident. And after the shark hadn't been seen since the incident.
A bit different than 20+ adult whites 100 yards offshore... Again, you can say that wouldn't scare you. But it's not true

Yea, I got circled twice this summer and neither of them did anything. One even came within a few feet right behind my board but it left me alone.

A bud of mine was paddling out this past summer on his LB when something caught his leash and spun him around 180 degrees. Said he didn't see it but it had to have some size to do that.

Yea we saw about 5 sharks in the 3-5ft range in 45 min at Palm Beach. That trip was fun regardless.

"what's the open container law in Florida?.....uhhh, CHUG!"

This. If I can actually identify it that is. If I can't, time to move along.

Add in tigers to that list. And whitey's, but in 40 some years of being in the water and countless fishing trips offshore never even seen a whitey.

I never worried about hammerheads until I saw this.

Aggressive lil bastard. Now, the guy was fishing, but I've seen tons of hammers out fishing and never seen one react like this.

notice how the shark lines up his initial attack with the kayaker looking directly into the sun. then the shark does a follow up attack on the complete opposite side (presumably) behind the prey. does like that every time.

That shark looked extremely ticked off, more than anything.
