I remember in the 90s I stayed at the 777 inn in sunset beach, and a lot of times instead of making the drive to h.b I would surf out front at anderson st. I actually caught one of the most memorable days of surfing there. I was wondering if it still got fun... The drowning topic made me think of that...and i pray for the victim and his family.
indeed it is. a mellower, shallower break than BC or HB, but also seems less windy. i surf at 5th with a friend who lives in the condos across pch. ya just gotta watch for the stingrays
Do you mean 5th in H.B? I remember especially when H.B got macking and/or closing out a lot...anderson st would remain more rideable..still doing that deal?
5th in seaside, sunset beach. to clarify, sunset /seaside are just north of bolsa chica, which are all the northern extreme of hb. and yes, it seems that the long beach bay effect makes sunset in general glassier and more rideable, but alas, smaller.....i have never gone to sunset and had it be choppier than HB or BC but i have seen it absolutely flat (like sat eve, for example), which is quite rare south of there.
Yea buddy im real familiar with that area like i said...I just thought you meant you resided in H.B on 5th..Where are you from? Do you ever surf the cliffs? How is dog beach breaking?
just being clear buddy lives next to bay off of 5th. i drive from IE to meet him there to surf each friday. the rest of the time i usually go to bolsa or hb state, the latter of which i've been going to since the 70's. we sometimes drag the boards to the cliffs...as you may know, they reopened the harbor estuary with a boulder jetty just north of seapointe at the south bolsa/north dog beach juncture. it has created a nice long mellow break as the sand has built up and out on the south side (dog beach/boxcars) that extends about 100-500 yards south of the rocks, but on the north side it is super surge-y and quite agitated (the red zone in the photo)...but the waves do tend to get big there first if there is a build-up. http://bp1.blogger.com/_kDyTcbycWv4/R6lIgIG-R4I/AAAAAAAABwk/Nt7h-UODX10/s400/Bolsa-Chica.jpghttp://bp1.blogger.com/_kDyTcbycWv4/R6lIgIG-R4I/AAAAAAAABwk/Nt7h-UODX10/s400/Bolsa-Chica.jpg
so now i can park at bolsa south end and walk across the new bridge that spans the outlet to get to dog/cliffs/boxcars area
The last time i was there was in 07...i havent been there since they did that. Thanks for the info...there used to be a heavy right shorebreak south of anderson st...about a mile or two...is that still there?
that sounds about where bolsa begins south of sunset. that is an area i have not been to in a while. i will check it out
you mean seal? north of anderson is the bridge/sub tender and then seal beach. i have surfed the river mouth but that's a bit further north of that area than a mile or so. i will check out north...
lotsa rays...sting rays was there fri and sat am. glassy but small, 2-3 ft with occ 4. drift is southbound. water 64 degrees. misty on sat am.
weekend update.... went out last fri and sat . small (2-4') but glassy. became windy about 11 and after that it was a mess. supposed to be great fri am. glassy and chest, but it rained for first time in many months so water is def sketchy till sat or even sunday. oh well. winter sizes seem to be settling in, so there will be more opportunities
5th st revisited was there thursday, sat and monday last. there was a good swell fror awhile but it has dropped, so this week is ankle slappers. i ripped out the leash plug on my dewey weber on sat so i was on a jones noserider monday with minimal results. hoping to pick up dewey from ding dr on fri (tmrw) to get back on my log. i have sponged and surfed hb a lot, and when surf gets big (5+) i def sponge rather than surf...not quite there on the weber yet, but working on it. i often go to hb state beach or to bolsa chica for bigger, stronger surf than sunset offers.
