Not to pour on more sensationalized media, but since the washout has been a hot topic of conversation this past week since Bertha, I am surprised nobody mentioned this boogie boarding youngster getting nibbled on at the washout 2 days ago. Minor injuries, but the mention of "repeatedly biting him" is someone concerning. brave little kid for sure, i would be curious to see the official bite medical evidence. so many things about this story from different sources. first report was he was 30 yards offshore, today a news report said it was as he was walking into the water. the kid said the shark was 4-5 feet. thats a decent sized shark and would have taken a ppretty big chunk imo...something for sure did bite him. with the ever increasing crowds at the charleston area beaches i am sure there will be more..years ago you could count on two hands the number of people in between each rock groin...now adays your lucky to get a 2/4 piece of sand to lay a towel down to sit on. facts and percentages,,add more people to a limited area the chances of x happening increases by y etc..
This story is very similar to the one down here last month. Tourist lady right at Coligny, the most populated beach on the island. People surf fishing all over the place. Got bit on her foot. She identified it as a 5 foot shark and witnesses confirmed because she lifted her leg up out of the water and the shark had clamped on. So the lady lifted it up out of the water enough to strike it in the side of the head. Then it released and swam away. She and other people identified it as a Bull Shark, but no one with any kind of expertise saw it and her foot was pretty mangled, but the bite was from the bottom and around the top and it pulled and tore, so I don't think at the end of the day that anyone definitively identified what it was. I posted in another thread, but they cleared Coligny again just a couple days ago because a Shark was ripping apart a live whale just 50 or 60 yards offshore. The whale was almost dead and was really sick, so i am sure the stench of it attracted the attack, but still it was enough that they cleared the beach for 30 minutes. And Rcarter: It could have been a blue, but I can't throw a line in the water down here for more than 2 minutes without pulling a black tip out of the water. And black tips are not notoriously dangerous, but they bite. They bit my buddy while I was standing right next to him in waste deep water. After I told that story, a classy SI member from Jacksonville actually sent me a "Fin Ban" in the mail to give to my friend. Pretty cool idea. Hopefully it works.
yea i imagine surf fishing doesnt help any, i tend to steer clear of anyone with lines in the water....on a side not my daughter got hit by a small jellyfish at IOP yesterday evening/last night
Yeah, jellies are bad this year. I do surf fishing, but only in the evenings and far away from people. My feelings on this subject are starting to change, because the majority of visitors to this area don't really use ethical practices while fishing. Their idea of an empty stretch of beach is 10 yards down from the lineup. It's "legal" though, so whatever. This is more of a fishing town that a surf town and I am new to the area, so I can't really complain. I wish the general public would just use more common sense. I know lugging your cooler another 100 yards is not ideal, but it's the right thing to do. And if people would do a simple google search, they would realize that there are much better fishing spots in places where there are no swimmers and no surfers.
people try to act cool like I survived a shark attack when a 2ft sandshark nibbles on their toes.its like getting shot with an airsoft gun and saying n1ggas tried to clap me.it doesn't scare me one bit.its like never leaving home because u can get in a car and get killed in a car accident.shyt happens people.live life to the fullest,if u love the sea don't let some megladon scare u out of the water.the day I come face to face with a great white is the day I agree with u people on sharks. on another note fishing is cool.its just common courtesy to not fish with people in the water nearby.its like taking a shyt on a crowded beach on the 4th of july.some people are just d1kheads.i had a few run ins with fishing lines while surfing but never got hooked.idk its like some people think the beach ends.the ocean never ends,walk down til theres no people.crowded surf,go walk down the beach,that simple.shark over here,ima surf overthere.most of the surfspots I know of came about from me walking down the crowded beach to a more peaceful area.
