We're staying in Corolla for a week at the end of next month. Not my choice, we usually stay in Rodanthe area, but the wife picked the house this year with friends. I consider it South Sandbridge, so never really went there much over the years. Too close to home as a crow flies, but too long to get to by car. Any place better to surf than whatever street I happen to be on in Corolla? I know I can go down to Duck and try the pier, but haven't surfed there in many years either. Can you even park near it anymore?
Well, 23 foot A-frames are hard to come by outside of Jersey. I just mean little wave breaks under 8 feet. You know, the kind you wouldn't even bother surfing.
Tip: When you go, go EARLY. You don't want to be on the road to duck after 9am'ish. Backed up all the way to the bypass and then some. I stayed north of duck last month and there were a few breaks here and there all along the beach. Nothing looked exceptional but there did seem to be many decent sandbars dotting the beach. Hit the sand, look north/south for spots where the beach bumps out and make the trek to see what you find. Good luck, hope you score a few.
I used to have access to a 3 story condo off C street on Sand Bucket arch for 3 or 4 years. I loved that place. I got my only surf this year at the beach access in Sanderling. every place else was flat. Moose is right about getting there early. we used to leave 11pm on friday. of course we were in a piece o' crap mobile so we were the traffic. There seemed to be waves every weekend.
In front of the sanderling wasn't too bad last month. Looked like there were similar spots up towards corolla too. Walk the beach at high tide and look for the shallower spots to give you a few options for lowish tides.
Dude, there is no solid reliable spot in Corolla. Pray wherever you are staying has a solid sandbar. Hey it could work out. I lived there for a spell, and spent much time there before that. I got pretty lucky. I explored the area, and my hood actually had the best waves for awhile there. Ocean Sands - Section H, I, J........check it out. Park in the tennis court parking lot if it's good. Cops don't go into these neighborhoods unless they are called but there is a security gaurd that does the rounds. Some old, angry guy back when I was there. But I doubt they would hassle anybody parking in the lot. I forget the name of the street, but the street at the southern end of the Food Lion complex, right where The Tomato Patch is at.........used to be ok. The beach in front of the Lighthouse can be ok........Maybe check the first public beach access directly south of Corolla. Longshot........but who knows. But Corolla is awesome, man, especially if you're high. Make sure you go to The Corolla Chapel and that old village thang. I know it's a church, but you can live out all of your Little House on the Prarie, one room schoolhouse fantasies there. Totally twitchen. Cosmos for pizza. Get drunk and hassle people at Timbuk II. Plenty of eastern european chicks at The Tomato Patch. Hassle the "locals" there, too. They all think they are cool because they moved there from Pittsburgh or Falls Church, VA a year ago. They're all JOE SURF and JOE OUTERBANKS LOCAL. Sundogs if you want to watch baseball. Might be some "cool locals" in Sundogs, too. Watch out for the Jersey tourists. And the New Yorkers. Basically, Corolla kind of sucks when you're sober. But it's great when you ain't. OH, watch out for Ohioians.
Just head for Hatteras in the AM and be back in the house by 10AM every day. Wife won't even notice if you get her nice and drunk the night before.
Also watch out for the Pennsylvania Allstars. I spent a week in Corolla at a beach front house and had a descent break in front of me. No one in sight, until a few PA Allstars showed up and paddle out right next to me. Had my best Dolphin experience there as well. Every morning a pod of Dolphins would circle me and the younger ones would come within a foot or two. Also PJB is right, bring some greens.
Ya, that's been my view of it over the years. Go there to get drunk and/or drive on the sand in Corova, but never really went there to surf. Growing up in VB, I can spot those Outer Banks "locals" pretty easily. They have pink OBX decals next to the stick figures of their family and one for the dog too. Usually a Pittsburgh Steelers or Ohio State sticker somewhere as well.
I see the OBX stickers all the way down here in the Tampa Bay area too, accompanied by the stick figures and dog as you mentioned, maybe even a Salt Life decal if you're lucky.
That's funny you say that. The 2nd part of the definition for Salt Life in the Urban Dictionary pretty much nails it: 1. Salt Life Originally a sticker on the back of cars used to denote a surfer, bodyboarder, or general beach bum whose life centered around the ocean or related beach going activities. Ever seen a 32 year old man whose primary activity was surfing and working on his tan? That person would have a salt life sticker. Unfortunately the trend spread to senior citizens, wanna be hipsters, soccer moms, and other persons wishing to inform the world that yes, they too have visited the beach at some point in life and they have the sticker to prove it.
Alright this is too funny I gotta weigh in here. Even up here in New England you see the OBX stickers(as described, complete w/ stick family) all over the place. Salt Life is big too, and over the fourth I was at a beach/fireworks/party deal and one of the residents' truck was reppin' salt life hard, multiple stickers, and dude even had the Maori safe passage charm necklace. I mean, if that's not core, I don't know what is.
Now looky here........I'm jaded and always want substances to accentuate the experience, though I'm not allowed to have them these days. But I keep dreaming. I will herbalize again one day. I just have to keep my urine pure right now(no, I'm not on probation, it has to do with a career change) and I have to hook up with a new crew. I exiled myself from my old associates and I refuse to deal with the old drunk, coke head weed dealers I once knew or the younger, "speak more ghetto than those who actually live in the ghetto" Lil Wayne types I knew. See, I now have some principles or principals. I'll go without before I go back to them guys. And I stay off the streets these days, too. Anywayswho, don't get me wrong Corolla can be good fun with the proper mindframe and given that it is just a week long excursion. You can get high and go to the old Corolla Village area and take yourself back to the 1800's. If you can do that without herbal enchantment, great. The eatearies/bars always offer up some people watching entertainment, plus you can talk to people from all sorts of locales, which gives you new prespectives on life......maybe...maybe not. I don't know what VA Beach is like, but NJ's beaches are a police state. Everything's illegal. Shoot I think they tried to ban chicken wings in Surf City.....and footballs. So of course alcohol is illegal. But in Corolla you are free man. Shoot, they have two Currituck Sherrifs that cruise RT 12 once in a while. And on the beach you can drink and eat chicken wings. Even the neighborhoods are kind of cool to walk around especially at night. I just love the salt water-weathered trees and bushes there. They got character. Spooky looking like Scooby Doo and the Mystery Machine. The beach is killer at night. Oh Lighthouse Bagels has the best bagels, man. Their bagel sandwiches are the cat's meow. Straight up. And the locals I'm refering to are the younger ones. Straight out of high school or college with the "OUTER BANKS DREAM." They've vacationed there, so now it's going to become home. They instantly become JOE LOCAL as soon as they land their first bartending or waiter gig. OMG, they've been there forever. Then they deal with a winter there and go running home or realize that fancy Bucknell degree doesn't do them much good in friggin Kitty Hawk. Ahh the dream dies....and it dies hard. Have a good time and hope right up the street from your pad has a decent sandbar.
