This old fart is giving it a whirl. Dropping dairy was easy for me, as I'm lactose intolerant. Sugar and grains is a challenge, but I don't want to get the diabetes, and I've get some blood pressure issues too, so WTF.
iv'e done it. it works but my body freaks out when i get about three days in. get ready for: 1. you will have intense cravings for carbs and sugar after the first day or so. then the cravings go away. 2. i get the sh!ts really bad on about the third day. this is actually a fairly common side effect. they go away too. 3. be careful if you plan on exercising. you will like like zero energy. you get used to this too. look up 80/20. this works best for me. ymmv

Capt. Jack, I advise that you do some research before embarking on a Paleo diet, or any other diet for that matter. i'll give you my opinion of Paleo diet since I'm kind of a nutrition geek. Paleo diet at the heart is a good thing. it's based on WHOLE organic foods. nothing processed. we should all eat this way no matter what dietary rule you follow. it also matters what version of the Paleo diet you follow, bc there is no scientific proof as to what early man ate. like I've said in previous threads the early humans ate according to there geographic locations. some high in carbs some high in fats and protein. moist Paleo so called experts use 'bro'science and outdated medical research to prove their diet plan is the best. example: CARBS. they base 99.9% strict limitations of carbs based on studies of processed grains and corn syrup. while medical research shows that a fiber rich high fruit diet, whole grains and legumes is healthy and beneficial in preventing many health ailments. most of these so-called Paleo experts are very unhealthy too. classic examples are Dr. Atkins of the Atkins diet (which by all definition is Paleo) Dr. Atkins died overweight from a massive heart attack. Weston Price of the Weston Price Foundation who died of a stroke in his early 40's. Loren Cordain overwight and unhealthy looking. Sally Fallon of Weston Price foundation overweight. Mark Sisson calorie restriction, intermittent fasting on stimulants and steroids. Dave Asprey out of shape sick looking on stimulants and prescription speed and steroids and diabetes medication. Calorie restricts and intermittent fasting. These experts also recommend intermittent fasting and calorie restricting to control weight gain. also Metard (if that's Metard) is right when saying low energy. these experts also say that the Paleo diet is not good for athletic performance. they rely heavily on stimulants such as coffee to get through the day. some things to consider on the Paleo Diet: constipation, heart disease, over working of the kidneys, chronic fatigue, bad breath/ body odor. I work with a dude that eats paleo and when he farts you gotta leave the building for an hour. IMHO a diet high in fruits and veggies, whole grains and legumes, low in fats and protein is a healthy one. don't know where you get the spontaneous combustion from, but as far as bacon and good health goes its common medical fact that diets high in animal fats (bacon) is no bueno. this thread by Capt. Woo Hoo! I can still eat bacon... some. Actually, that's all I do (some), even though I love it. There ain't many things that make my house smell better than some bacon sizzlin in my iron skillet. It's gettin so danged expensive, though! Good link, Mr. Archy.
archy: Quite a lot of misconceptions in your post IMO. For the record I eat a paleo based diet with grass fed fermented dairy, white rice, and white potatoes. A lot of paleo detractors like to point out that we don't know exactly what our ancestors ate, or we can't eat the same foods as them because they don't exist anymore. That is not the point of paleo. We do know what types of foods our ancestors didn't eat (sugar, vegetable oils, grains, dairy, etc.), and we know what types of foods our body's are meant to eat (meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts). Paleo is about eating the foods our body's have evolved to thrive off of. I agree about paleo wrongly vilifying carbs, but it seems that carbs are starting to become more accepted in the paleo world. Keep in mind that paleo is a relatively new idea that has really taken off in recent years. People are still tinkering about the ideas. For example, paleo started out emphasizing lean meats, now it embraces fatty meats. I'm not sure where I stand entirely on grains.... I don't eat them because they seem more likely to cause harm than any good. I don't think they have much of any health benefits, and you would be better off replacing those calories with meat/seafood/vegetables/fruit, but as long as you keep them in moderation I don't think they are all that bad (except wheat, I wouldn't recommend eating wheat). Re: Atkins - It's really not that similar to paleo. Take a look at an Atkins bar ingredients list, it is filled with garbage. Atkins advocates the use of vegatable oils, artificial sweeteners, and is fine with some grains. Cordain, yeah definitely doesn't look great. If I remember he is an advocate for very low carb and low fat? Not sure if he has changed those views. I don't know much of anything about Weston Price and Sally Fallon. Or Dave Asprey, but I just looked up pictures of him and he doesn't look unhealthy to me. Mark Sisson - I can't remember every hearing him talk about calorie restriction. Also not sure why it sounds like you are vilifying intermittent fasting, it has a number of health benefits. Obviously the stimulants and steroids is just gossip. I've never heard of anyone in the paleo world advocating calorie restriction, I don't know where you are getting that from. Experts saying the paleo diet is bad for athletes is news to me as well. Constipation - yep, could be a problem if you go very low carb Heart disease - uhh what? Do you still think saturated fat causes heart disease? Kidneys - There is no evidence that high protein diets will harm the kidneys in healthy people Fatigue - Eat more carbs. Bad breath - If you go VLC (ketogenic) then you will likely have bad breath when waking up. I tried a ketogenic diet for a while and that was my only experience with bad breath. Farting - I haven't heard this one. While paleo I basically never fart, and if I do there is no scent. I'd recommend anyone interested in this diet/nutrition stuff check out resistant starch. A lot of really cool stuff coming out with the research on it, it basically proves that very low carb / ketogenic diet advocates are BS. Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I'm mainly trying to remove all the processed foods and sugar from my diet by eating healthier, organic stuff, etc. Paleo is the guideline I'm following. Fasting is definitely not in my future. Maybe I'll find some happy medium somewhere... maybe Metard's 80/20 is cool. My biggest problem is I snack on really unhealthy stuff (cookies). I think just cutting them out would make a difference. Following Paleo guidelines is making it easier for me.

the problem I see is the whole labeling of diets. since there is such a broad spectrum of "paleo" diets the confusion sets in. if your eating potatoes and white rice than in some paleo circles your not paleo. my diet could be considered paleo. no processed food, no processed oils, rice, potatoes, legumes, fruits and veggies all in their natural unprocessed state. only one thing. I own several, and there is def some good food out there free for the pickin. some of my finds not many people know that the American Indians subsisted on a tuber called the Wapato or Indian Potato and was a staple for many European settlers well into the late 19th century.
