Kevin Naughton and Craig Peterson drove from Orange County to El Salvador back in the mid 70's.

But that was then and this is now. Still doable, but the consequences have grown exponentially.

The opposite is people who never leave their safe space, their comfort zone. The name for those people is 'boring as fvck'.

    Well...yes and no.

I've bypassed many exotic trips because Mexico (my comfort zone) is cheap, fast, reliable and consistent. I speak the language, know what to expect and have the coastline pretty much dialed, cutting down on my skunk factor. Plus, I always take my wife, so doing a Mentawais boat trip is not an option.

OTOH, I have a very special date coming up in the next year, and have been looking at beachfront accommodations in the Maldives.

Everything looks and sounds perfect...except the 30-40 hours of flying time. I just don't yet know if such a great trip is worth that much time in the air, when I can hop a 4-6 hour flight and get warm uncrowded barrels just down the road.

It's not always just about "comfort zones", or as someone else once pointed out to me, a "lack of balls" lol.

I've put myself in surf conditions that were definitely not smart. Where I'd wager the risk of dying was greater than driving through Mexico. It's all relative I guess.
