I wanted to see if anyone else deals with anything similar and has had any success treating or preventing it. I get this pretty sharp ache in my arm that starts from where the tricep and deltoids meet and radiates down to both sides of my elbow. It feels like it could be tendons but I'm not too sure. It mostly occurs if I surf consecutive days or do a lot of climbing and surfing in the same week. I generally climb three days a week, never consecutively. I've got a pretty high tolerance for pain but had to end my session after 30 minutes this morning because I just couldn't paddle with it. However, it usually only lasts for an hour or two after stop whatever activity I'm doing. It's more than likely an issue caused by overuse but I know a lot of people who surf way more than I do and don't seem to be troubled by it. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had any success preventing it or if it's something I just have to bite the bullet on fight through. Thanks.
Mike, I get the same thing. It used to get to the point it would almost bring tears to my eyes. I used to only get it when I was surfing. About a month ago, I had done a lot of shoveling and it came back. I did go to a doctor when I was young and he had no clue. Now if it comes on, I pop a couple ibuprophen and move on.
I am sure thats prob what it is. But, it's not like I am sore the next day or anything. Hurts at the moment, ibuprophen, and its gone. Weird thing is, I don't always get it.
One of the things that definitely exacerbates that situation is Hydration. If you already have a muscle/tendon area prone to pain from use it Quickly will let you know when you're not Fully hydrated...hence the time to time and having it hurt at the moment.
Radicular neuropathy. There is a nerve that travels down from your neck and wraps your shoulder and arm all the way down. I deal with it on my left side on a pretty consistent basis. I've found massage works the best. Get a broom stick or dowel and start at the muscle at the top of your neck/base of your skull and work your way down your lats. You'll find the pressure points but they're gonna be somewhere in the middle of your neck muscles and the top inside corner of your shoulder blade. I was at the doctor once for allergies and he asked me if anything else was bothering me. I told him sometimes it feels like I'm having a heart attack because I get shooting pains from my shoulder down my left arm. He showed me those spots and recommended I get some massage. 5 minutes of working on my neck/shoulder and there were huge results. My arm felt warm where it usually felt pain and I had better range of motion again.
This works like gold for me- noticed a difference in a few weeks. I stopped taking it and slowly a month later the pain came back. All yous should probably take this to prevent rotator cuff injury. http://m.puritan.com/glucosamine-chondroitin-045 This is just an example- I buy the big generic bottle at Costco...
I'm right there with ya. No pain or soreness the next day and doesn't happen all the time. I'll try hydrating better to see if that makes any difference. Coffee counts as hydration right???
I used to take glucosamine for my knee (word down cartilage from football) and never felt like it helped much for that. You've had success with it in your shoulder?
Nice response man! I get a similar pain in my writst after climbing at the gym. Especially if I have been doing a lot of boulder work. I think mine is tendon related. Does it go away if you take a break from climbing and surfing?
I don't think coffee counts. LOL Unless you are having headaches, then the caffeine might help. I haven't been able to associate mine with dehydration, but then again, because I get it so ramdonly, i don't pay attention. Good luck man!
Yea it really did the trick- I completely forgot about my shoulders.... That's why I stopped taking it... Then in a little while the pain came back. I think glucosamine is to build cartlegde and chondroiton is a lub. The msm is pretty important- it helps absorb into your body. I only take glucosamine with msm. Try it for a while... But you may need more time for it to take effect. I noticed a difference in a month or so. But out took over half a year to get rid of the pain...
Shred gets a ton of arm pain when he surfs. That's because the dude is ripped and so sore from putting up 4 bones on the bench.
This^ I'm not sure if what you are describing you would consider similar to tennis elbow, although it sounds like it. I get a solid pain in my left elbow that is the same as the tennis elbow I used to get years ago when I surf a bunch of days in a row. I find the hydration part helps tremendously. Also, whoever said advil was good advice too.
