anyone use a face mask or "buff" for sun protection in the water?

I surf DP 99% of the time (hence my screen name), I use that SPF 55 Coppertone stick on my face, and I surf for 4-5 hours straight without getting out of the water and re-applying at all. I barely get any sun, just enough to add a slight tan, and i'm white and live in FL. Don't know how you're getting burnt or having trouble with the sun that early. The sun's intensity is very low at that time of the day. Be more careful from 11am - 5pm, that is the worst. Do you have a skin condition? Maybe that's the issue...

a buff is not a good idea to wear in the water, a lot bad can happen with a wet rag wrapped around your neck. Plus you'll look like a complete idiot....and this is coming from a Melanoma survivor. Oneil and Excel both make nice super thin hooded rashguards, I'd try those, I wear those sometimes when I'm longboarding. I also wear a boonie hat with a chin strap sometimes - Google "FCS Wet Bucket Surf Hat" combine that with healthy application of Watermans SPF 50+ Aqua Armor Lotion on your cheeks, chin, and lips and you will be fine.

Epic ^^^^^. Thanks Gaff ... that was a bright spot in a dim afternoon. My albino buddy is usually chill, but I've seen him flip a switch. Back when he had hair (way way back) it was long and blond. He was a drummer for a punk rock band, and wore a tee shirt he made him self (tore off the sleeves, homemade V-neck) with "God told me to skin you alive!" painted in red on the back of his shirt. I guess you got to watch out for those albinos. Oh, and I had a roomate from Indiana, he was pale as a ghost, I called him an albino mutha fuka and he snapped. It was like Armegeddon. Throwing phone books at me and swinging fists (he was a biggun). It was hilarious. Jeesh!

Yeah I have a skin condition... it's called being old! I am up in Maine so I would think the sun would be less intense like you said but for whatever reason I get grilled pretty good on my left cheekbone every summer. thanks for the input.

Gotcha, try Waterman's like others have suggested. That stuff is REALLY good. It's just a little pricey, but a worthwhile investment for someone in your situation. I usually get me some when I go down to PR because the sun is extra hot there.

I wear colored Zinka. Some people put white zinc from Balmex thickly on face-- it's sold in baby section since moms put it on the baby's butt to protect from diaper rash. There are a few really good surfers where I go who wear it. It looks scary, but it works. Clear zinc is worthless in my experience.

Why you gotta be such a ****? Dude has a serious question concerning his health, why mock him? I'm sure you are one of these great east coast rippers who think they are the next kelly slater, riding a short board in mushy gutless surf hopping it all the way to the inside then finish it off with some slack ass turn, but in your eyes you are throwing buckets with the fins released.

Whoa dude lurkes since 09 and comes out of the gates with the hates!!! In all honesty though there was 3 pages of fairly helpful and obvious advice (minus my comment about wearing a gimp mask) so the tread was due for some funny posts.

Zinc stick! If you use this and still burn, the sun isn't for you.

www.zinka.com This stuff is a million times better than baby cream. It's 100 percent zinc sunblock. I agree vanishing zinc is useless. Also, white zinc reflects Sun into your eyes. Better off going with a darker color. There's a reason baseball players use black under their eyes.
