how awful are these waves? i think it's hysterical everyone all year was skittish about the events in NY and SF because of swell quality then they get out to the 7 mile miracle and it goes flat for a whole month. hopefully it picks up as the week progresses, they only have today and 2 more days of event window open. surfline is saying there should be an uptick come tomorrow but it is boring/funny to watch guys milk waist high waves for a couple of off the tops.
Just tuned in, thanks! Pulled up this site before any of my local ones (because it's that good ) and didn't know it was on today. As for the waves, yeah.... nature sucks sometimes. Today makes Brazil look like it was going off... We're about to see a TON of groveling by some of the most wave-spoiled surfers on the planet! No offense, the Hawaiians just always seem to have waves. That's tough they only have two days left to run- while Sunset and other breaks in the area at least looked ridable yesterday.
It's going to be building, and honestly I don't think they are that bad. Just because they are small, they still look fun. A good way to test peoples equipment and skills in that smaller surf while it starts to build.
I would love to have the swell they had yesterday, they had some clean workable waist high little waves coming thru, and they are in boardshorts- could be worse! They could be in 4/3 boots and gloves riding sloppy waist high surf and not getting paid to do it!
this is the world tour. this isn't about guys "testing their equipment" and groveling or saying they're lucky. this contest SUCKED it was way worse then brazil. triple crown is over rated. just do a contest at pipe and sunset and be done with it.
Uhh, this is not the World Tour. This isn't even a WQS Prime. WQS is for grovelling grinders who some day hope to make the big time. I think this is a good test of surfing, even if it doesn't telecast well. And now that the swell has filled in, it's actually entertaining.
you're totally right, it's an ASP Star Event. who is the tool bag on the webcast along with Shea and Shane? oh man he is brutal to listen to.
I think you're talking about Dave Stansfield, yeah I always dread the North Shore events because I think he commentates all 3 events. He is not exactly smooth
yaaa man he was absolutely brutal to listen to. i really liked shea/shane. i don't understand how with the webcasts in Hawaii during the high season that you can't find some other guy to commentate. ughhh ok so now to the actual surfing. SO.MANY.AIRS. it was definitely a study in the new-new generation of aerial surfing. i remember watching ...What's really going on from 96' and they do a suppppppper slo mo on a chris ward frontside 360 since it was so innovative. now guys do those in there sleep. realllllly looking forward to sunset and pipe.
Agreed.. I'm only 20 years old so I never really got to see the early years of surfing, but I do find it amazing how soo many guys at my break can pull off 360 airs. It used to be something epic to pull off, but now you can see the move performed countless times at any decent break.
i'm only 26 but i remember watching (on vhs!) The Show, Momentum, What's Really Going On and Feral Kingdom like 4593859 x's when they came out. that seemed so progressive then. Nathan Fletcher Punker Pat and Ratboy and those guys were doing the whole skateboard inspired airs back then but no one really on tour was doing it. I mean Occy and sunny won world tours back then. occy was not landing backside slobs in a heat.
Don't get me wrong, I totally respect what the aerialists are doing to push the sport in a new direction, and I am incredibly jealous of their skills. But there's just something so timeless and beautiful about Taylor Knox setting a rail and throwing buckets. No matter what guys do above the lip, there will always be a place for rail surfing IMO.
