Same here, my wife (GF at the time) got one for me based on a recommendation from a friend and I thought it was cool when I opened the gift, I even installed a fin plug on the nose of one of my boarts to lock the mount into but never got around to using it. I actually felt silly when I thought about it. Just seemed like a weird thing to attach to my boart. I prefer filming from the beach instead, which I rarely even do that. I just wanna surf, man...
The only angle that's good is the one from a stick held behind the surfer... so you get the barrel shot.
my younger bro has 3 of them, he's a racer on his wknds. asked if i wanted one last wknd, and i was like "nahhhh". didn't realize that it was created by a surfer for surfing purposes, thought it was "born in Japan" or sumtin. bro said he's waiting to get one from China that while filming goes straight on Youtube live to view
I have one and had it facing me on the borts to video my paddling and transitions so I could critique myself. Helped a bunch but pretty soon it began gathering dust as I figured out how to know what was going on without seeing it on screen... now the only way id use it is if I was good enough to mouth piece it or the stick for from behind view, on good waves or even maybe some shady days in a tube. Which translates into probably never again Hahahaha
When I'm shooting with the big white lens guys come up to me all the time and ask if I took pictures of them. I've never had the heart to tell them this. I'll take your picture if you're surfing is worth shooting. I'll shoot good surfing all day.
Was messing around with my Nikon years ago, taking shots of guys getting barreled @ Playa Colorado. They came over post-surf & asked if I happened to catch any of the action & if so could I email pics to them. Seemed like a cool bunch. Sure, happy to do so. They said c'mon over for dinner. Turns out they were staying nearby, bunch of Cali guys on a surf trek. One of their surfing group was a pro chef in a major LA restaurant; the others paid his way if in return he cooked all their meals. Guy could really chef - - seemed like a fair trade to me, pics for a superb gourmet meal in Nica. Point being, you just never know.
That’s how it should be...being cool is hard for some people I guess. A few years back...shoot a decade maybe, I was scoping some pictures on a photog’s post (he was from Wrightsville I think). Happened across a picture of me (the collection was from a really good day in Rodanthe). I shot him an email and offered him $20 for the photo file and he sent it to me. Thought that it was a random cool episode and scored a pic. Getting pics in general, at least for me, isn’t really anything other than having a killer memory. As I get older, and go back and look at them, it allows me to reflect on that session or just the surfing journey itself!
Even if I knew, I would have told them to go phuck themselves. But that is just friendly ol' me. It's my charisma; can you feel it??
I have a gopro mount on my beater LB and I take it out on lazy days to get some footy of my friends and I kooking it up. After just one day of using it I became painfully aware of my arm position and that I surf with a giant mouth open grin haha. I love looking at the vids post session in the parking lot, or at my desk at work. The new gopros broadcast their own wifi signal so you can look at the videos on your phone right after you take them. The vids usually make for some good laughs. I surf to have fun. I'm not trying to be the most core dude out there. If it's a small day and my gopro leads to a few laughs then it's a positive thing to me. I don't take it out on big or good days due to the distraction factor. If you want to use a gopro, use it. Everyone is out there for their own reasons. Live and let live.
