idk man that picture looks pretty accurate. I was surfing 2-3' overhead. 6pm was perfect just over head and clean. as soon as it got bigger it was just close outs. ****ty swell direction for us. morning proved to be nothing but the atlantic lake. glad most of us had fun. shaka
That buoy reading is from like 8:30. I won't keep going with this, I see you are really invested in the idea that Rockaway was firing, but listen dude, I can see the ocean from my living room, or at least I could until they piled 15 feet of sand where the boardwalk used to be. I was out in the morning on the fourth, it was fun, clean, peaky windswell from the advancing front. By 11 or so it was pretty much flat. Around 4 I walked across the street and checked it, it was still flat, but with a decent number of surfers sitting looking longingly at the horizon. At 5, when the rain stopped, I went out with the family and walked 30 or so blocks east on the beach, there were still plenty of surfers out, it was still flat. I got something to eat and walked back the 30 blocks, around 6 or so the occasional waist high wave was pushing through. I went out around 7, it was a very inconsistent chest high wave with maybe an occasional head high wave. Some of the smaller ones would set up off the jetty, but for the most part it was blocks long closeouts. MFitz also says it wasn't working. I think, based on previous posts, that he generally surfs west of me, and I'm sure that the further west you were the less swell there was making it through. I haven't seen anyone in this thread or any other saying that Rockaway was working, I even posted a link to a video for you, and yeah, for an hour or so it wasn't bad for July, but there just wasn't that much there considering that it was a category 2 storm close enough to give us a half day of rain.
The graphic out of Surfline that shows how the swell bends from the Canyon is highly dependent upon period. Short period swells do not bend like that at all. Only longer period swells do. The period from the Arthur swell changed rapidly as the storm moved up and away from the NJ coastline, and spots turned on and off within about an hour. Just take what you got and be happy about it...
Sorry for the confusion, I have no idea what New Jersey was like, and did not intend for that graphic to show what happened in New Jersey. Any shorter period stuff up here was well after dark (or early the next morning, it was still hanging around in the waist high range).
OK. He said it was ankle high. You said it was head high. I'm not saying it was firing. Just saying there were definitely waves in the area.
OK dude. I actually don't give a crap if there were waves in Rockaway. He said it was ankle high. You said it was head high. I'm not saying it was firing. Just saying there were definitely waves in the area. If you didn't find them I'm sorry. [/QUOTE]
That is my friend John. The girl he is apparently dropping in on was wearing a thong. That was the best part of this swell in WB. Out of the 400 people out at the south end, two were wearing thongs. Thanks for posting this.
Jersey was on fire! We got some fun waves but they weren't as big as dirty Jerz. Thank you for sharing.
http://easternsurf.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=1540:one-hit-wonder&Itemid=109 Slide 13... pretty sure there were waves in western LI.... sounds like you just missed out on a great early summer swell (if there was ever such a thing) or are trying to downplay its size to appear experienced... either way, i could care less. glad you had fun in your "chest high" waves
I was surfing 18 inch waves in western long island to my dismay... until 8pm. take it from me during the day when any natural light was shinning there were no waves bigger than 1 maybe, maybe 2ft.
quick here too...i pretty much missed the best first hour or so and got out late because of work but managed to score many good, clean, long rides that were mostly chest high over a two hour window...then it began to drop but i began to get greedy...waited for about an hour to catch one last one in with an incoming tide and very strong cross/off shores where everything was getting mushed down and held up, and swell going from fading to life support in about 20 minutes...never got that last one...but had a lotta good ones prior to that...with the wnw winds and the chesties it almost felt like fall, did anyone else notice a huge temp drop in water, yeah it's usually never warm up here, but it was nearly frigid. the day before it had to have been low to mid 60s, the day of it must have been low 50s. i'm guessing on a lot of up-welling
