Is it me? I have watched every event on the asp....I am pretty much the type of person that likes everyone and never jumps on the hate train...but there is just something about Medina that bugs me...not because he is the leader, but there is just something...maybe it's his stepdad...and Iam impressed how close he is to the family, which is great...but there is something just bugs me about the dude...don't get me wrong, he does shred. Does anyone have the breakdown on what Mick or Kelly need to do to win the title when they reach pipe...I guess I will do the math. It's horrible to say, but I hope medina gets knocked off early at pipe to make for an interesting title race.
Although I am more of a fan of the Women's WCT I try to keep up with the Men's tour as much as possible (perk of the 9 to 5? ) and I must say I am so happy someone else feels the same way! I always felt bad wishing that Medina would fall, I also can't figure out why I don't like him! Normally I like seeing new people win but theres just something about Kelly always hanging in 2nd or 3rd and then stealing the title for the 100th time that I like more...
Mr coop, you dont like him cause hes a douche canoe Ms Campbell, welcome to the feeding frenzy. good luck
Yeah, in epic Brazilian fashion, he exited the water two minutes left in the heat, fist pumping.... Only to get beaten. He said afterwards "I thought I won. I thought I had the scores" then "I was so happy when I saw Kelly lose".... ugh.
Hi Caroline. Welcome to the Swellinfo forum. You should start a thread titled hello and introduce yourself properly. RI huh? Isn't it a great place? Now, as far as this ASP business. Man, I was over my parents' for bean suppah yesterday and wow, the sh!t's on big channels(ABC methinks?)...I couldn't believe it. Don't just blame the internet for crowded lineups crackers, blame the ASP and television.
Yeah. He does nothing to help his image. He comes off so unlikable. BUT, he should have won that heat. If he won with Simpson's waves the Zosea conspiracy talk would be on fire. And I don't see anything wrong with him saying he was sad when he lost, but got happier when Kelly lost. He's being honest there. And other athletes say that stuff all the time... Plenty of reasons to hate on the kid, that's not one of them
i didnt catch those heats but kelly missed a big opportunity to narrow that gap. where was the 540 whatever when it mattered? Mick capitalized. jjf looked unstoppable until he stopped himself against jordy i am cringing about where this might go (not the ASP)
I agree that his honesty there should not be over-looked, and maybe in this case I have selective hearing, but I don't recall many competitors actually acknowledging their happiness over others defeats. I mean, I could see Kelly saying "Man, I really got lucky there. The kid lost his heat and that left me in a better position", but to use the term "Happy" doesn't seem like the best call... Its like any pro individual sport. Like when you are in a PGA playoff, hole for hole and your competitor misses an 8 foot putt and that give you the win. Sure, you celebrate, but you don't say, "Man, I was happy when Rocko missed that Putt".... You just say man, what a match, what a competitor that other guy is. I feel very lucky to have won here. Maybe that is just it. The kid is too honest. At at that age, if I was able to speak my mind openly in a situation like that, I would probably sound like a **** too. It's like the Andy Irons thing. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way because he kept it real and was always honest, even when that honesty made him out to be an as$
I read somewhere Slater and Fanning need to basically win and Medina needs to finish lower than 23rd. Or something like that.
The kid has no class. It's not that he's "too honest." Although, once again, your earlier post made sense fran. What's happening to this world when a WalMart puppet starts making sense? Anyways, the whole leaving the water before the heat is over thing because he thought he had won the heat is bullshiiiiite with a capital douche canoe. That's just total bush league behavior. Medina has ability but he's a spoiled brat, coddled by his cloying clingy family, and Medina seems to have that deadly affliction that's so pervasive these days: 'someone owes me aka sense of unearned entitlement.' I hope that Mick or Kelly or basically anyone blows him off the Pipe early in December.
Here is the only breakdown I can find... Seems confusing: Mick still has to surf his round 2 heat against Alejo and do the following to win the world title. - He would need to place second or better in Portugal. - He needs to win Pipe, Kelly to do no better than second and Medina to catch a 13th. - That scenario relies on John John not winning the next two events, which we will get to now. If John John wins in Portugal & the Pipe Masters and Medina places fifth or worse in Hawaii JJF will win the world title. It’s an outrageous prospect but the kid is on fire and stranger **** has happened. At Pipe Medina needs to make the semis and get a third place finish to secure the world title. If he only makes the quarters or worse his victory hinges on a couple of things. - John John not winning Portugal and Pipe. - Kelly not winning Pipe. - Mick not winning Portugal or placing second and winning the Pipe Masters. Slater’s loss to Aritz straight after Medina’s heat stunned everyone. The previous day he had landed a 540, named it a ‘Huey’ air, and reminded everyone that he is a 42-year-old freak. If anyone was feeling it in Portugal, it was Kelly. But his round 3 loss doesn’t count him out of the world title. Kelly needs to win the Pipe Masters and rely upon a couple other results to go his way. - Medina needs to finish no higher than 9th or lose in round 3. - Obviously John John not winning Portugal and Pipe. - Mick not placing second or better in Portugal or winning the Pipe Masters. And if you think he has forgotten how to crush dreams on Hawaiian soil remember the 6x Pipe Master has produced two impossible come from behind world title victories before in his career. In 1995 Sunny Garcia was poised to win a world title. Sunny needed to advance to round three. Instead he had the mother of all shockers against Occy and exited in round 2. Meanwhile Kelly surfed his way into contention all the way to the final. Kelly drew the groovy Californian, Rob Machado, who famously slapped the Floridian a high-five, submitted the title and wrote another chapter in surf history. In 1998 against young Australians Mick Campbell and Danny Wills the script unfolded perfectly for Slater. Cambo and Willsy were both in contention for a world title but had little experience at Pipe. When 12 foot third reef Pipe greeted the pair the odds quickly began to stack against them. Kelly needed to make the semis, which he did, winning the event in a rematch against Machado. If you were a betting man you’d be forgiven for letting it ride on Kelly. He thrives on a challenge and before him is an almighty one. He knows Pipe, what it’s like to be in a world title race and although he’s got his poker face on you can bet he’s done the calculations. Medina will be feeling the pressure in Hawaii. This is it, prove the haters wrong and make history or fold at the enormity of the task at hand. Whatever happens the ASP must be quietly licking their lips at the prospect of a four horse race at surfing’s Mecca.
im happy mick won Portugal for getting robbed of his 12pt ride in the 2nd round.jjf reminds me of bryan Cranston.he sneezes he wins an Oscar.jjf does a turn and and air and its a high 9 when anybody else would be a 5 at best.just tired of seeing jjf so underestimated of his potential, kid got skills, but if the judges give him scores for doing nothing, well maybe its better not to charge and injure himself knowing he can get a score aslong as he stands up
I dunno, my opinion on JJF is that he just has a few variables that the older heads, AKA judges and the guys that run the tour have been longing for. It's something that the surfing world hasn't seen much of and it is akin to the surfing days of the 80s and 90s. Its called power. JJF doesn't usually just do turns. The kid moves water in a way that most of these youngsters can't do, then he follows it up with a clean air variation. He just has a combination of skills that the Hawaiians love and the older guys do too. I have been blown away by a few waves I have seen JJF get. Pulled out of a barrel and then just hack the sh** out of the ocean.... I would say there are other guys on tour that can do certain things better than JJF, but JJF is the total package. He can make anyone smile watching him surfing. The old guys that think airs are some kind of "trickory" just love the kid. He can do it all.... Don't know much about him, but when I see the kid surf at any location, he kinda blows me away. Like some sort of OCCY/SUNNY/KELLY/TAJ freakshow hybrid.
yea jjf definitely rips, nobodies denying that, just the judges don't let him do his full potential.if he gets a decent barrel with a nice hack at the end(they give him a high 9) and they give him a 7,he will go back out and take off super deep and see his real potential.when they hand him out rides for nothing its pathetic. im from the days of sunny Garcia, dean Morrison, luke stedmen, bobby Martinez, the irons bros.thats when the pro tour was good.i can honestly say 38 of the 44 surfers on tour suck!!!!this is what we have, kelly slater(good) mick fanning(eh pretty good)joel (eh iv seen better) jjf(good),taj used to be good he sucks now, thats all I can think of.travis logie, the 10 Brazilians, brett simpson(disappointed he doesn't do good,he can really surf if he gets the right wave),nat young is cool I wont put it past him.bede durbidge is the best aussie on tour but he rarely gets his waves(idk if bede is even on tour anymore),Julian Wilson is a low budget hybrid of jj,adam melling charges but he never does good, the French kid whatever his name is Jeremy flores one of the best people out but he sucks,he would whoop jjf any day of the week in a freesurf.
