JJ, IMO, is insanely good...I would imagine most of the pros would hate to draw him in a round. Kid has style and crazy ability...and he seems to be a like able dude.

I have never really seen JJF freesurf, so I don't know what kind of style he has outside of the competitive areas, but that also goes for Medina.

I just think back in 08'-10', the surfing world was pretty shaken up and the thoughts of most were that this progressive, aerial surfing was going to take over the tour and become the norm, but in actuality, based on the locations, that stuff only translates into a few of the spots each year. I think the older guys and fans are all taking a deep breath, realizing that you need to be well rounded and that the tour isn't filled with 19 year old Brazilian aerialists. There has only been one person in the past 20 years that is "the total package" and that is Kelly. He knows when to go deep, he knows when to hack and he can go air born with any kid on tour. So, if Kelly is the standard, JJF is just the closest thing behind that and the crazy thing is, that when it is all said and done, JJF MIGHT just bring more to the table then Kelly ever did. Not saying JJF will win 2 world titiles, much less 11, but it certainly is a breath of fresh air to see an all around shredder that can just move the ocean in the opposite direction and throw buckets unlike any other guy on tour.

    Exciting year though for sure.

Well said. Plus, he surfs in a way that just says 'command presence.' He has real charisma out there in the ocean, if that makes any sense.

I don't think he throws buckets as well as anyone on tour. He charges heavy surf with more stylle than anyone and can compete with anyone's air game. But I think guys are way better with turns (I'm sure he will improve as he gets older)
In Surfer (or Surfing) Matt Biolos and Darren Handley both said they think his rail game is actually pretty weak.

Maybe so, but his potential is through the roof. Check this wave as an example. Shaky start on his rails, to big hack, the crazy almost falling air. In a couple more years, the kid is going to be clean as a whistle, but even now, he can take out anybody in a heat if he brings his best.

There are a few shaky spots on this wave, but they still gave hima 9X. I just think that first turn he does is just lethal.

its funny, despite technical blah blah blah, some people are just great to watch, Kelly, JJF, Parko, Fanning all very fun to watch in serious surf.....

Medina is like watching a southern dandy trying to chew tobacco when he is in the big stuff
