yes, plenty of people surf assateague. But, good thing is that it is generally further for most people to drive to, and no matter how many people are in the water, the crowd can be very spread out with the sand bars there.
don't know what ya mean about "true",but yes,they have had wild horses there continuously since i can remember.it's best not to mess with them too much,they can become nippy if they see you have alot of food & they want it. we used to occasionally feed them from our jeep back in the 70's.
It's all relative, crowd usually is not all spread out, and only certain sand bars seem to work consistently year to year. Summer can be very crowded and a pain in the ass to most of the people who surf there consistantly. It's one of those places that everyone thinks is open ground and up for grabs to anyone who wants to come without realizing just like any where else there is a core group of people who surf there everyday. If your used to 48th street in the summer than yes it is less crowded than that.
Yep! A few of us do year 'round. Mid through late summer is about the only time I experience any crowds and thats mostly out front with alot of swimmers. I've had as many days surfing totally solo as I've had with others out. Its a friendly place and we intend to keep it that way. So for those that are used to the overcrowed spots remember to respect the locals and anyone out and leave your agro stuff at the crowed beaches. We dont entertain that kind of behavior. Always friendly! Chincoteague can be very fickle so I think that alone keeps alot of people from checking it or coming back if they got stunk. The horses are cool. Sometimes they'll even stand at the best break. I guess telling us this is the best spot. In April the babies are just getting their legs, often dont listen to mom and come up to us. Very cool until mom takes notice. Its a wonderful nature reserve.

hearing that makes me want to come for a night or two when it warms up. what is the best swell angle/dir? looks like s swells pick up well? don't worry, i'd be surfing solo and would not bring any disrespect
I surf there most of the year but sporadically at best in the winter. Summer I am there almost every weekend and a few solid weeks at the end of the summer for a full fledge vacation we have a house there. Never crowded when you consider crowds anywhere else and it will stay that way just because of the inconvenice of getting there if you arent staying on Chincoteague. I would say most mornings in the summer I surf solo if there is swell the same 10 guys will be out...Like someone said very fickle to the tide swing especially if there is little to no swell it can change to not breaking at all. Beautifull though like no other spot i have been probably what surfing would have felt like 200 years ago on the rest of the coast before it was develped. Like another poster said no attitude here whatsoever.
