I know Rad Brad is all about it drilling and thinks the more rigs offshore the better... I'd be pissed.

Is this a different situation than the other offshore shilling thread?

I heard this on NPR on the way home from class today. It made me really mad. Like swearing in the car mad. The coastal wetlands in the Atlantic are a vital economic and an even greater ecological cornerstone of this region. TO EVEN ALLOW THE POSSIBILITY OF A BP TYPE SPILL --- is so incredibly stupid!!!!!!!! The gulf of Mexico will take centuries to recover from the pollution that was caused by the Deepwater Horizon failure. We will never truly understand the impact, but early signs of what will become of that ecosystem aren't looking great.

Offshore drilling is a step in the wrong direction. Instead of allowing these companies to operate in areas that have been restricted FOR 30 YEARS, they should encourage investment in technology that WILL GET US AWAY from an unsustainable fuel resource.

    -end rant...

i can't help but wonder if the atlantic offshore oil thing is coming up now....now, that there is excess
capacity and low prices......as a BACKDOOR environmental move. meaning, in times of profit it profits
but in leaner times it fails. on purpose.

Since the first oil platform was deployed off the coast of Terrebonne Parish in 1947, the number of rigs off the Louisiana coast has swelled to more than 3,700. These structures today comprise what is essentially the world's largest manmade reef. Schools of several different species of fish gather in the offshore waters of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico at these man-made reefs of oil rigs.

    Rig Fishing

And the fishing here is spectacular, whether it's speckled trout, snapper, amberjack, grouper, lemonfish, or redfish you are targeting. "There's really no limit to what you can catch at these offshore platforms," Pique said. "This is some of the best fishing anywhere in the world."

    Playing Devil's Advocate here.
Flame away if you feel the need.

so that just shifts the focus from gas to electricity. Where does all the extra generating capacity come from Einstein?

in maine some turbines are being used to harness tidal energy.
i think Indian River Inlet would be a good place for one.
the tide there can be fearsome.
i bet even michael phelps couldn't swim against it.

Nice, an actual idea!! thank you. I think tide harnessing can work (I believe Denmark uses it to some success) but NEVER to the scale need to replace oil. Nuclear is pretty much the only thing right now that even comes close but I can only imagine the apoplexy of Brad if an offshore nuke plant got proposed.

I have a friend who just retired from Solar Turbines; it's a division of Caterpillar. He was installing and maintaining several natural gas turbines that were operating on landfills, burning off the methane that is produced from decaying garbage. I'm all for new and reusable energy sources as long as they are reliable and cost effective.
