Pardon mi Spanglish. I was milling around, looking at a possible surf trip in the Caribe. Something besides PR (which is fine but want to go somewhere new). After looking at Dominican, BVIs and Barbados, I started to research Cuba. It seems it would be totally doable on the North to Northeast...as travel seems to be opening up a bit with all the talks among the gov't types (although the geography, roads, and accomodations are weak). I think it would be cool to see but I really want to get solid surf time in. Blazing trails to unknowns in Cuba...I don't know. I am leaning toward Centro (El Sal) or Cabo this year but was wondering if anyone has thought about it or experienced Cuba in any way (surf or otherwise)???
no. thinking about it. buy a sailboat in idk tampa or key west. sail to nw coast. surf. return. wanna come?
Sounds killer. Never owned a boat but have sailed a few times. There are setups (like timeshares) down there...ownership with out the headaches ($$). Hire a captain and charge??? Shoot that would be epic...I would not only do Cuba!!!
the sailboat idea gets around the 'no roads' thing as well as paying for hotels/taxis/airplanes etc.... am thinking mosquitos could be a problem; though... should be able to get a decent sailboat 2nd hand cheap. if its REAL CHEAP when we wreck it we just paddle away....NEXT adventure.
Uh, the hairiest ocean going experience I've had was coming around the western tip of Cuba in a big a$$ cruise ship in like 50+ ft seas. Standing on deck you would see nothing but sky for like 30 seconds, then nothing but water for 30 more seconds. Sh!t was crashing and falling all over the ship, and the crew was visibly scared sh!tless. Everyone hid in there cabins, and the ship seemed empty. I was out and about, enjoying the ride. Moral of the story- be careful with that sailboat idea. The ocean is no joke.
thanks doug - i'm still in one piece on account i do the ocean/respect thing. and i have sailing experience as a hand on the last sail powered commercial fishing fleet in america. that said; **** yeah - it HAS TO BE HAIRY there - hence the 'throw-away aspect' of the sailboat. (also we'll prob have a sup or two onboard....)...oh and, of course, you are invited. (donde esta mi maneras?)
yikes! ok i won't. the big dumb**** move sailors make is called "cleating the main".....("just for a sec; what harm could it do")... which means hooking the mainsheet onto the tiller for convenience or otherwise sake.
...we would certainly need some deck hands. Sniffer, the driver of that boat got clocked! He was out.
