Hey everyone.. wondering how much insight you guys had into a project I am planning. This summer (maybe early fall) I plan on ATTEMPTING to break the Guinness World Record for longest surf session. The record is 29 hours and a few minutes.. Here are my guidelines.. I can take a 5 minute break every hour and I am able to "bank" my breaks. So I could surf for 3 hours and take 15 minutes out of the water.. So total it will take me about 31 hours to be successful. I feel as if I am as trained as I will be. I have surfed every day this year (usually multiple sessions) even when the weather has sucked. I still realize that this will not be easy by any means...My biggest fear is the sun.. I can change boards whenever I want to but it has to be within the break period.. I cannot walk back down the beach if the drift is down (unless its during a break) so I am hoping for a calm winded day. I can have people swim me out food and water... The night does not bother me.. I go midnight surfing on a full moon often.. Even alone although I know that is foolish... Here are my issues.. I have to record all 29 hours of the surfing.. I assume this will take multiple video tapes and will probaly need to rent two video cameras for the day and have one charging and one running the entire time.. I also am concerned about the light at nighttime. I dont care about being in the dark but it has to be properly recorded for Guinness to accept it. So I have spoken with the Fire Dept and they will let me borrow a spot light. Do you think that will attract sharks? I also wonder what the Sea Turtle people will say about that one.. I need qualified witnessess to document the marathon and Guinness told me that lifeguards and surf instructors would be allowed so I have that covered. Another question I have is time frame. I wanted to do it on a full moon for for the lighting but wondered if the tides would be too fat at that time. I dont know what they would say if I had a 3 hour break when no waves were breaking.. I was thinking of doing this 7/13.... I have been in constant contact with Guinness and my doctors.. I once again would be raising money for a charity OCEAN CURE.. (http://oceancureinc.com). Same one I raised money for last year when I went 439 days straight catching a wave (broken up by my family dragging me to the mountains)... Let me know your thoughts and suggestions..
I would definitely do this in belmar. that way when you take a break you can do some reps on the bench press.
Wow, It's so funny because I was thinking about breaking that same record just last week, and have been debating it between myself... Good luck man. Where do you think you'll do it? I'd like to come out and watch for a spell..
Keep sunscreen in your pocket so you can reapply and wear a hydration pack or something to stay hydrated. You can do without food for that length of time but water is a must. I'd bring some energy or protein bars with you though, something you can put in your pocket or in the hydration pack. Other than that, good luck, you'll be a prune when you finally get out the water, but I bet it will be an experience to remember!
Might want to put the light down the beach a little bit and angle it towards the swell direction. You'll still light up the water but the bait fish attracting light won't be right in front of you. Good luck. I hope you make it.
Ill do it in Kure Beach by the pier.. Maybe I could use some of the light off that to stay alit... Ill be having people paddle water out to me every hour.. Food I can eat during the break... For sunscreen I guess Ill use zinca.. Even put it on my lips.. I just have to plan for a window of days because it would not work if the wind is blowing too hard or it is storming.
If the pier has lights (which most do) then there ya go. I've surfed Cocoa Beach pier in the dark, the lights on the pier and the moon was good enough, and it was really fun actually
Guy posted this in the wedge thread going on right now, probably should have posted it here instead lol Good luck with this though bud, sounds like a pretty physically and mentally demanding goal you've set out for yourself. I hope everything falls into place for you and you snag the record!
I wonder what makes a person seek attention by beating a 'record' good luck, seems fun, but I dont even know, are you bring attention to a cause? also, turtle people will only care during nesting season, and the light will attract fish which will attract sharks get night vision for the night, hihger end cameras have the switch I think, or you can buy a lens for a few Benjamins
Ya he mentioned a charity- More noble when your doing it for a cause like this versus just going for some bragging rights
Yeah wasn't it last year or something they pulled out of the surfing world? For a couple years they were selling nike branded surf apparel/shoes and doing sponsorship's. Then they realized the surf world wasn't worth their time and money
